    In St. Petersburg, Russian army officers lead 3,000 soldiers in a protest in the Senate Square against czar Nicholas I when he took the throne. The uprising was crushed by the czar and the protesters, called Decembrists, were sent to Siberia
  • Nicholas II becomes czar of Russia

    Nicholas II becomes czar of Russia
    Successor of his father, Alexander III, to the throne over all of Russia. He was untrained to rule and was not focused on doing so.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    Russia wanted a warm water port on the Pacific ocean Russia fought against Japan and weas defeated in every battle. The war ended with the treaty of Portsmouth.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    In St. Petersburg, Russia, unarmed protesters lead by Father Georgy Gapon Marched to the Winter Palace. The protesters were presenting a petition to Tzar Nicholas II and were shot down by the Imperial Guard.

    During the war, Russia initally sent its first army straight for Germany. During the start of the war they were very successful but Russia took heavy losses at the Battle of Tannenberg and Germany was able to push Russia out of Prussia completely.

    Also called the February Revolution, the event was focused towards Petrograd which was the capital then. The revolution ladted less then a week and involved armed conflicts with police as well as mass demonstrations.

    Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne
    Nicholas II was untrained in ruling over the country and angered many of the people in Russia with humiliating losses against Japan and the many lives lost against Germany. He was forced to step down for the safety of himself and his family.

    A multi-party war that started immediatly after the Russian Revolutions. The two largest groups were the Red Army fighting for the Bolsheviks and communism and the White Army made up of many allied groups.
  • The creation of the U.S.S.R.

    The creation of the U.S.S.R.
    The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was created in 1922 and contained Belorussia, Ukraine, and the Transcaucasian Federation along with Russia. The countries all signed the "Treat of Creation of the U.S.S.R.". The U.S.S.R. was run intiially by the head of the Communist Bolshevik party.

    Vladimir Lenin’s Death
    Lenin dies in his home in Gorki after having a series of strokes. Before he dies Lenin was worried about Stalin gaining too much power and wanted him removed but that did not happen.
