The Russian Revolution

  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    It was the war between Imperial Japan and the Russian Empire over Manchuria and Korea. The Russian armies were quicky losing, due to their lack of a navy. With a lack of supplies and without a navy, the Russians underestimated their non-western enemy. Lossing battle after battle, Russia saw that resistance against Japan was hopeless.
    ~The government failed the people and seen as being weak by its citizens.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    ~A peaceful march led by a pastor, the mob march upon the Czar's Winter Palace, singin hyms and asking for reforms and freedoms. The Czar was frightened by the mob and ordered his guards to stop the mob. They open fire, killing +200 people in the crowd.
    ~The people's faith and trust in the Czar and his governent are killed.

    After Bloody Sunday, worker protests and peasant revolts increased rapidly.Terrorism, agricultural struggles, and mutiny withing the army spiked. The Czar was desperate to stop these revolts. In the end, the government created the October Manifesto, a consitution that gave basic freedoms to the people and the appointment of the Duma, a second governing body.

    Gregory Rasputin
    A peasant and a self-proclaimed "holy man" that was interested in drinking and women. He gained power and influence for curing the Czar's son Aleksei of a blood disorder. When Rasputin gains power, the government slowly began to crumble. Soon, nobles, government officials, and Royal family members decided that they needed to kill him. After a failed poisoning attempt, they shoot Rasputin, and dump his body into the Mayala Nevka River. The damage was irriversable.
    ~Discontentment and hate grew.

    Russia Enters World War I
    Russia declares war after Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia for Arch-Duke Ferdinand's assassination. ~At first, people were patriotic about the war, rallying behind the Czar, but as time passed, people wanted Russia out of the war.
  • The Febuary Revolution

    The Febuary Revolution
    Because of military failures in the war, Czar Nicholas II leaves for the frontlines, leaving his unpopular wife and ministers to govern. Meanwhile, riots and strikes were constant. Food & fuel shortages made things worse. Soldiers ordered to stop the riots either didnt do their jobs or joined the rioters. The city of Petrograd had fallen to the rioters and a new government was made.

    In March 1917, the army garrison at Petrograd joined striking workers in demanding socialist reforms, and Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate.
    ~The people of Russia were able to create a new socialist government from Petrograd.

    The Russian Civil War

    After Lenin's Bolsheviks seized control of the capital, anti-bolshevik groups started to form, such as the monarchists, the militarists, and foreign nation,such as the US and Britain. After the treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the Russian people saw how weak the Bolsheviks really were and decided to split off into their own independent nations using the help of The Whites, officers loyal to the Czar and the Allied powers. Even though they were against impossible odds, Russia was united under Lenin.

    The November (October) Revolution
    After the November revolution, power was shared between the weak provisional government and the Petrograd Soviet. Then on November 6th, revolutionaries led by Bolshevik Party leader Vladimir Lenin launched a nearly bloodless coup d’état against the provisional government.
    ~The start of the Soviet government began.

    On March 3, 1918, Lenin wanted to concentrate on building up a communist state and pull out of the war. He did that by signing the Brest-Litvosk Treaty, which made Russia give up some land, but gave them the ability to leave the war.
    ~The Russian people were able to see that the Bolsheviks weren't as strong as they were originally thought to be.

    Death of The Romanovs
    After his abdication, Czar Nicholas II and his family were placed under house-arrest outside of St. Petersburg. During the Russian Civil War, the family was moved to Tolbolsk, Siberia, and then Ekateringburg in the Ural mountains. For Lenin, the family was giving him problems. Being the source of inspiration for The Whites, he decides to execute them. thinking they are taking a group-photo, they take position, and are shot by troops coming into the basement.

    The Formation of the USSR
    Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine, and the Transcaucasian Republic write down a constitution to form the Union of Soviet Socialists Republics (USSR). From there, they either add more natinos that are willing to join the USSR, or use force to make weaker nations join.
    ~A new super power is created, built upon the ideology of communism and the use of fear to control the masses.

    Lenin's Death And The Competition To Replace Him
    After 3 strokes and the problems they caused, Vladimir Lenin was dead. The person to orginally take charge was Trotsky, Lenin's right-hand man, but Joesph Stalin not only sabotages his attempts to take power, he steals it from Trotsky.
    ~Russia was under the control of a ruthless leader that used fear to control everyone.
