Hitler liked the ideas that the party had about what they thought Germany should look like. What he saw was an unorganized party, but he saw the potential in this party. This was important because this was Hitlers' first time in politics. He would later become the leader of this party, and it would help propel him to become the leader of Germany. -
Hitler named leader of Nazi Party
The Nazi party (formerly known as the Workers' Party) tried to weaken Hitlers position, but he countered them by resigning. Hitler announced that he would return if he was made chairman and given dictatorial powers. They realized that without Hitler, it would mean the end of the Nazi party. On July 29th, he became the Führer of the Nazi Party. This was important because, now he is the leader of the party, and could control them to bring him power. -
Hitler on Trial for Treason
The judges let Hitler use the courtroom as a propaganda platform. Hitler became an internationally know figure due to press coverage. Hitler admitted trying to overthrow the governmant, but used his skills to back up why he did it, and to try to make others sympathetic to his reasoning. This was important because the public, could hear his ideas, and while in prison he could re-think his strategy of gaining power. -
Germans Elect Nazis
During Hitlers speaches, he turned the crowd into a screaming, frenzied sea of people. He offered something for everyone in his campaign platform. In the election the Nazis received 18% of the vote, and were suddenly the second largest political party with 107 elected representatives in the Reichstag. This was important because this showed Hitler that his plan was working. This also got the Nazi party more publicity. control over the country, and was a good step for the party. -
Hitler Named Chancellor of Germany
After a false plot to have President Hindenburg arrested, and a takeover of the government, the president decided to appooint Hitler as the next Chancellor of Germany. This was important because this was an important step to becoming the dictator of Germany. He was now one of the most powerfull people in Germany. -
The Reichstag Burns
Hitler blamed the fire on the Communists, as well as Social Democrats and the Reichbanner. This was important because he effectively crushed the main political opposition forces, and now there wasn't anyone to stop his rise to power -
Hitler becomes the Dictator of Germany
Adolf Hitler had Political enemies arrested. The Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, which let Hitler pass laws without the permission of the Reichstag, and also banned all other political parties. -
The Gestapo is Born
They made Hitler's political opponents disappear. They helped inspire fear in the population. This was important because, when people were afraid, they would be less likely to speak up against Hitler. -
The Night of the Long Knives
Hitler ordered the death of the SA leaders and other political opponents by firing squad. This is important because, now there are less people who opposed him, and he can have more control by replacing the SA leaders with more loyal people -
Hitler Becomes Führer
Hitler received 90% of the votes, and became the ultimate leader of Germany. This is important because now there is no one above him and he doesn't have to worry about losing his position. -
Hitler becomes Army Commander
Hitler abolished the whole War Ministry, and replaced it with the High Command if the Armed Forces, and gave himself control over everything. He now had control over the Army, Navy, and Air Force, which crushed the possibility of the army taking over the government. This is important because this let him do whatever he wanted with the military, and there was no threat of a military takeover.
