  • Rocket Summer

    In this first chapter, Ray Bradbury intruduces some of the scene for book. It begins with the inhabitance of the dying world called earth watching the rocket prepare for launch. The heat of the rocket quickly spreads and effects masses of people.
  • Ylla

    In this chapter, we first learn that the Martians are very much like humans. They think, feel and have emotions like we do. The only differences are their looks and telekinetic abilities. One martian, Ylla, starts having dreams of an earth dweller coming to mars. Her husband becomes jealous and eventually shoots the space explorors that come to mars.
  • The Summer Night

    In this chapter, we see more of the Martians' telekinetic abilities as all of the children starting singing songs in english; which they should not know.
  • The Earth Men

    The second expedition from earth lands on mars and the four explorors go searching from door to door to find out what they can. They soon find out that everything seems like it is on earth and they are eventually sent to an insane asylum where they are killed.
  • The Taxpayer

    This short chapter is of a man who is yelling that he should be allowed to escape earth and go to mars because he pays his taes. Ironically, his taxes are also what pay the police officers who take him away from the scene.
  • The Third Expedition

    Captain John Black and his crew of men finally land on mars and begin exploring. There was only one big problem. The only people they found were their friends and long lost loved ones. The captain knew that something was wrong but even he was too overcome with emotion to do anything about it.

    the Martains were able to trick the humans with their telekinetic abilities and then kill them.
  • –And the Moon be Still as Bright

    In this chapter, another rocket travels to mars with Spender, Cheroke, Hathaway, Sam Parkhill, Captain Wilder and others in it. When they arrive, they find that most of the Martians have died from chicken pox. Later, when Spender returns from a scouting trip, he murders the rest of his group, clearly sick or diseased.
  • The Settlers

    During this chapter, many men from Earth were making the Journey to Mars. Whether it was to escape the impending war or because they had always dreamed of space travel, they went. Their numbers steadily grew.
  • The Green Morning

    This chapter connects to the folk tale of Johnny Appleseed. In, The Green Morning, a man named Benjamin Driscoll rides his motorcycle around Mars while planting trees wherever he goes. After a drought and the rain finally comes, he sees a beautiful landscape of green.
  • The Lucusts

    In this chapter, we see the people of Earth characterised as locusts because of their destructive nature of using up resources. Rockets were landing in swarms and towns were created in a very short time.
  • Night Meeting

    A man named Tomas Gomez is traveling to a party where he intends to get drunk and meet lots of girls. On the way, he encounters a martian but when they try to touch each other, their hands pass right through one another as if they were from different dimensions.
  • The Shore

    This is a short chapter in which people from mainly America are colonizing Mars. They start off building small towns, but each wave gets stronger and stronger until they build entire cities.
  • The Fire Balloons

    The chapter is titled "The Fire Balloons" because of the many rockets traveling to mars. When an individual from mars looked at the sky, they could see what looked like hundreds of balloons of light traveling towards them.
  • Interim

    In this short chapter, the cities of Earth are being recreated on mars. It is compared to the wizard of oz when the house is completely moved by the twister.
  • The Musicians

    This chapter seems kind of weird because a few young people entertain themselves by going through dead martian towns and playing with the corpses. This demonstrates the destructive powers of humanity and the lack of simpathy for anything not human.
  • The Wilderness

    This chronicle talkes about Janice and Leonora as they prepare to travel to mars to reunite with their friends. They say the things that they will miss the most are the chocolate malts and perfume.
  • The Naming of Names

    This chapter is a reference to Adam and Eve as they named everything in the garden of Eden. The humans from Earth are taking their time to name different landmarks and animals. But they are using the names of Earth and disregarding the Martian culture.
  • Usher II

    In this chapter, Mr. William Stendahl is obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe and decides to make a house in the exact comparison as one of his stories. He also makes robots of creaters, bats, and even the people he kills to make sure his house stays safe.
  • The Old Ones

    This chapter focuses on the older generation traveling to Mars. They are hoping to start new and get a fresh start as they have spent all of their lives on Earth. This also shows that humanity believes it is safe enough for the older generation to travel to Mars.
  • The Martian

    In this chapter, LaFarge and his wife witness the return of their dead son. They soon realize that he is a martian and chace him through the town. But as others see him, he turns into someone important to them as well. Eventually, his body cannot take the strain and the martian dies.
  • The Luggage Store

    In this chapter, a priest and the owner of the luggage store are talking about how they believe that the people from earth that are living on mars will soon return due to the impending atomic war on earth. This gives a point to humanity because it shows that they still care for their past and culture.
  • The Off Season

    We again run into Sam Parkhill as he is trying to start up a hot dog stand. As a martian comes to speak with him, he is startled and shoots it. He then spends a long period of time running away from a group of martians and killing many of them as he goes. Later he finds out that they only wanted to talk with him and they gave him the deed to half of mars.
  • The Watchers

    This is the chapter where the humans decide to return to earth. It says a lot about humanity as they decide to return to earth even with the atomic war going on. Culture and their past is more important to them than their safety.
  • The Silent Towns

    In this chapter, a man named Walter Gripp inhabits an almost completely deserted mars. He tries to find others by calling numbers in the phone book and finally finds another woman alive. He then travels to find her but upon realizing that she does not look very good, he decides to live the rest of his life alone.
  • The Long Years

    In this chapter, we find that Mr. Hathaway and his “family” are some of the only people left on mars. Finally, a rocket is spotted and we again meet Captain Wilder. As the reunion between the two commences, Mr, Hathaway seems to be having heart trouble and he soon dies due to the strain and excitement of seeing of seeing other people. We (the audience) also find out that his family actually died quite a long time ago and he has replaced them with lifelike robots.
  • There Will Come Soft Rains

    This chapter descripes a futuristic house that still believes there are humans living in it even though all the people in southern california have been killed by the atomic war. The only thing living in this chapter is a dog who eventually falls over and dies from exhaustion.
  • The Million-Year Picnic

    In this final chapter, a father takes his family on a rocket to mars with enough food to last for years and a gun. They eventually settle down in a city which shows that there is still hope because humanity is finding a place to live.
