    The Big News
    On a cold september morning, as I was taking my daily walk to the post office. I notice that the townsmen have wide smile's on their faces.At this I am very eager to get to the postoffice to see what is going on. As I walk into the old creaking building I notice a group of people gatherd around one of the post boards. When I finally get to the front of the crowd I read what everyone is so happy about.There is a Charlottetown conference going on,and if all goes well Canada will soon be a country.

    So far there has been only one conference but I suspect that there will be more. I have heard that there is going to be another one today but I do not know anything else about it other then the fact that it is being held in Ottawa.

    As I get home I get out a metal barrel that my mother used to use for chruning her own butter. It is up to my knees and has a wooden plundger in it.

    Today is the day that I will learn to churn butter. I head to the farm down a couple blocks to get some milk.As I walk up to the farm I notice that Tom (the farmer) is churning some butter of his own, so I decide to watch go get a bit more skill in doing it. Tom is very focused in churining and doesn't notice me walking up. When Tom is done I ask for some a couple liters of milk. When I get it i pay Tom and even give him a few extra cents because I know business is slow. Now to churn;

    My neighbor Frank told me that there is going to be a final conference today. I am very excited for Canada to become a country, but first we need to these conferences to finish. I have been thinking about moving away, and out of Newfoundland, for the past couple of months work just isn't very easy to find here.

    Today is the day that I turn 15. But it is also the day that I move. I am moving from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. I will be taking a boat there the trip will take around 3 days. I am moving because I need to find work. I have looked around my town and even the next town over. There is no work, but my neighbor moved to Nova Scotia a couple months ago, for work so I thought I would go to try my luck.Since I have no family here It is not very hard to leave the place I once called home.

    My life has gotten much better since I moved to Nova Scotia. I have found a job working at a post office, I put up the news on the post boards, I like this job because I get to see the happy faces of the poeple looking at the news. I still remember the day that I found out about the Charlottetown conference and how happy I was, now I get to witness those faces first hand. The post office I work in is a bit different from the one back home, it is newer so it is not as creeky.

    Today we got the news that Canada is now a country. Everyone is happy as ever. Edwin told me the news today when he got home from the farm, and he was so excited.Im sure work at the post office wll be harder now that there will be more news.

    Reno brothers train robbery. Seven of them entered the train and stole $98,000. They are still at large. I know this because I was directed to hang the wanted posters up on the post boards at work.

    Edwin proposed to me the other night.He couldnt affored a very expensive ring. But I think the simplicity of it makes it more beautiful. It is a plan silver band. Since he proposed we have been talking alot about planning the wedding.We have decided to have a small maybe 15 person wedding. We wont be spending much on the dress. And the wedding will take place on the backyard,hopefully it will be everything I imagine.

    I am expecting my baby in the next couple of weeks, It is very difficult to work with my big stomache but I need the money so I cannot miss any days. My neighbors are happy for me, as their son is the father. He is a very handsome young man, with light brown hair that is always hidden by a hat and very broad shoulders. His name is Edwin and he is the Father of my child.

    We had a Daughter Exactly one year ago. We named her Nancy Mea. I have Had to stop working in order to take care of her, but Edwin still works on the farm. We are having trouble paying for everything, but we need to try our best, Nancy has been getting sick lately alot but we have no extra mony for any kind of medication. Hopefully she will not get any worse. I would hate to lose her at such a young age.

    Me and Edwin have been hearing alot about the can opener lately. Sadly we can not afford one yet, but maybe we will go to the shops to look at them and figure out how to use it. This baby has created alot of complications, bit we cant help but love her any less.

    Even after Nancy,I still take my daily walk to the post office to see what is going on. The news has been pretty uninteresting lately, but today was different. Today I found out that the congress created a U.S Dept. of Justice. I might not live in the U.S but it is exciting to know that the congress is creating new things.

    Since the passing of Nancy,I have gone back to work at the post office. At the moment I am putting up the latest news,and I have come to learn that there was a fire in Chicago! it is terrible the fire has been burning for a whole day, and continues to burn. No one knows when the fire will be put out, they are doing there best but the weather has been so dry lately that they fire can burn all the vegetation.

    Working in a post office has its perks, you know all the news first before anyone else. Today I learned that British Columbia is going to be a part of Canada. I can't wait to get home and tell Edwin the news, His face always brightens when I get home and tell him all the news from that day.

    For supper today we are having some beans with some beef and some vegetables from Edwins farm. This supper is special because Edwins parents are coming over. I hope they like the food.

    We finally got a can opener and it has been making life so much easier. Edwin and I have been putting away little bit of money, for a couple months now. And we finally has enough to get the can opener. The people at the shops were very suprized to see us getting it because only the well payed families have been getting them. But we needed it and we will use it.

    Edwin's mother had asked us to come over for some supper tonight , so she could deliver some news to us. As we arived at the small house, Edwins mother Kitty opend the door and greeted us. She had tear streakes on her face and her eyes were red and puffy, it looked as if she had been crying, but why? When we walked in Edwin and I noticed that his father was not at the table,when we asked where he was Kitty started crying again. at that we knew something terrible had happend. Robert had passed.

    It has been very cold the last couple of nighte we are running low on fire wood. We dont own very many blankets but all the ones we do are on Nancy. Hopefully we will be able to make it through the night

    This morning we noticed that Nancy is looking much paler then usual,and does not seem to be well. Even though we have little money, we go to the doctor because we know something is wrong. THe doctor sees us and takes a look at Nancy, He explaines to us that she has phneumonia and most likely will only live for a little while longer. At this I start crying, she is so little and does not deserve this if only we had given her a better life maybe she would have been able to grow up.

    After Nancy's passing Edwina and I have been very upset. Everything we had for her we had to sell of give away. We made a few extra dollars, But the fact that we had to sell everything is terrible. Hopefully one day we will be able to start a family once again, and give our kids a better life.

    Edwin has been working hard at the farm the last couple of weeks. He has been home less, So I decide that I am going to go and visit him since I do not have work today. When I arrive, I hear alot of noise near the back barns so I make my way there. When I get there I hear these strange grunting noises, I walk in and see Edwin and another farmer huddled around a cow. I then notice that the cow is in labour, I walk over to Edwin and help him and farmer Ted deliver the calf.

    For the past couple months me and Edwin have been saving money for another child. We don't want what happend to Nancy Mea to happen again. Hopefully soon we will be able to start our family again

    I have been hearing alot about these things called cash registers lately. Theyare supposed to hold your money and make it eaier to pay and give change. Hopefully my boss Mr. Jones will be goos at teaching me, Because I have a hard time learning new things.

    Today on the news post I put up that O'Canada was perforned for the first time. I put up an article about it and also the lyrics. My boss asked us to learn them , so that if anyone comes in and askes what they are we wont need to read through them.

    Today these two men showed up our house.They said that they were doing a census to find the population of Canada. Edwin told them that there was only the two of us. They thanksed us and then left. I thought it was strange but also interesting that they want to know the population.

    Today our premeir Simon H.Holmes was replaced with John S.D. Thomson. John Thomson has nine children, and hopefully will lead us into great things.

    Today Canada is swithcing to standard time. This means that depending on where you live in Canada you all have to change your clocks to a cartain time, instead of going off of solar time.

    As I was hanging up some of the news for today, I heard a little ding that tells me when sonmeone enters. I turned around to greet them but I tripped over my feet and fell. When I fell I landed very hard on my wrist. I felt this very sharp pain and knew something was wrong.The person who came in ran over to me and helped me up. I knew I needed to go to thre doctor so I asked them to take me there.

    Next to the post office where I work there has been an empty spot for as long as I can remember. But today I found out that a tailer bought the space and is going to open up a store. Maybe he and Edwin could become friends.

    It is my 17th birthday today, but I am not very excited. I have been having some pains in my stomache so Edwin is taking me to the doctors to see what is wrong,so much for a good birthday.

    It turns out that I am pregnant.I am very excitedbut also very nervous. Even though we do have some extra money, our child could still get many sicknesses. Edwin has tried to assure me that everything will be ok but I can see the dought in his eyes,He know just as much as I do that this pregancy could take a turn for the worst.

    This morning at around 6;00am I had our son Thomas. I was feeling some extreme pains in my lower abdomen and knew that they baby was coming. I called for Edwin and he came running down the hall. As I told him what was happening, He called the doctor and told him that I was going into labour. When the doctor showed up I was relieved because I knew that the baby would be out soon. Edwin stayed by my side and
    about one hour later our son Thomas was born.

    SInce having Thomas I have once again stopped working. This time we have more money so me not working is okay.Thomas has not gotten sick yet and hopefully wont.

    Edwin has not been feeling so well lately. He still goes to work because he knows that we need the money. I dont want anything to happen to Edwin but I want to give Thomas the best life that I can, so I need him to work. I just hope he does not get any worse,

    Thomas has needed alot of new clothing lately. I have made him alot of new pieces but some I needed to take to the tailor. I try to reuse the old fabric because I do not want to waste it. Edwin thinks we should buy new cloths for him. But I dont want to spend money that we don't have to. The clothes dont need to look great they just need to keep him warm and covered.

    I got news that Sir John. A. Macdonald passed away in office. Everyone is upset about it, and also very curious to how he passed. I guess we will all have to wait and see if they publish any more news about it.

    As I was posting some of the news on the post board, I noticed an article about Newfoundland, so I decided to read it. Two thirds of Newfoundland were destroyed by a fire. At times like this I am glad that I decided to leave, and start a family.

    I have not been feeling well lately, I have gone to the doctor and they told me nothing was wrong but I still think something is. I am not as energetic, and I am always tired. I have stopped working at the post office because of how sick I feel, hopefully I will get better soon and be able to see Thomas grow up.

    I think I might have some kind of sickness but I do not want to worry Edwin so I have not told him yet. I have a feeling that I will not make it alot longer. So I am going to write Edwin and our son Thomas letters. I hope some day they will forgive me for not letting them know about my sickness I just dont want to worry them.
