    Began to practice law.

    Married Martha Wayles Skelton on January 1, 1772. They had six children together. Out of all of them, only two lived to grow up.

  • The Declaration of Independence

    As a delegate to congress he helped draft the declaration.

  • France

    He was appointed minister to France replacing Benjamin Franklin.

  • Politics

    Appointed senator of state by President George Washington. Thomas Jefferson was also part of the Southern Democratic-Republican party.

  • Election

    Jefferson was elected president and made Aaron Burr his vice president.

  • Election #2

    Re-elected as president with the new vice president of George Clinton.

  • Legacy

    Thomas Jefferson's gravestone reads "Author of the Declaration of Independence [and] of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom & Father of the University of Virginia."

  • Death

    Thomas Jefferson died on July 2, 1826 at his home in Virginia he called monticello.
