  • Austria - Hungary

    They were with The Allies. It all started one month after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were killed , Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, beginning the First World War.
  • Serbia

    Central Power! The brand of nationalism which did most to undermine international stability by 1914 was Serbian.
  • Belgium

    They were neutral. The Germans invaded Belgium, this horified the world because it was correctly seen as the Germans trampeling the rights of a small neutral coutry in violation of international law.
  • France and Colonies

    They were Allies. French colonial troops played an important role in World War I and used by the French as occupation troops. particularly incensed the Germans.
  • Montenegro

    Austria declared war on Serbia on the 28th July 1914, Montenegro joined afterwards. Montenegro declared war on Austria on the 7th August and Germany on the 9th. They joined in with the Allies.
  • Japan

    The Central Power! Japan sends an ultimatum to Germany, demanding the removal of all German ships from Japanese and Chinese waters and the surrender of control of Tsingtao.
  • German Empire

    was a major part of the Central Powers. During World War I, Germany barely emerged victorious in August 1918. In October 1918, the Reichstag convened where a new democratic constitution for the German Reich was written, then adopted on October 28.
  • Italy

    Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary, entering World War I on the side of the Allies—Britain, France and Russia.
  • Bulgaria

    Prime Minister Vasil Radoslavov of Bulgaria issues a statement announcing his country’s entrance into the First World War on the side of the Central Powers.
  • Ottoman Empire

    The Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers to form the Triple Alliance with the signing of the August 1914 Turco-German Alliance. Turkey formally entered World War I on October 28, 1914, with the bombing of Russian Black Sea ports. The Triple Entente, or Allied Powers, declared war on the Ottoman Empire on November 4.
  • Portugal

    Joined the Allies! 1916, Germany declares war on Portugal, who earlier that year honored its alliance with Great Britain by seizing German ships anchored in Lisbon's harbor.
  • Romania

    After Romania declared war on Austria-Hungary, formally entering World War I, Romanian troops cross the border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire into the much-contested province of Transylvania.
  • Russia

    Allies! Russia signalled there withdrawal from World War 1 soon after the October Revolution of 1917, and the country turned in on itself with a bloody civil war between the Bolsheviks and the conservative White Guard.
  • Brazil

    Brazil declares its decision to enter the First World War on the side of the Allied powers.
  • Liberia

    They are Allies. The European war, World War I, resulted in the trade between Liberia and Britain, France and the United States reduced to almost zero due to the German submarine blockade. In 1917, Liberia joined the Allies against Germany and liquidated a property of German nationals in Liberia. The money generated from this liquidation was deposited into the Liberian government bank account to compensate for loss of revenue from the blockade.
  • USA

    Two days after the U.S. Senate votes 82 to 6 to declare war against Germany, the U.S. House of Representatives endorses the decision by a vote of 373 to 50, and the United States formally enters the First World War.
  • Greece

    They were with the Allies. Several weeks after King Constantine I abdicates his throne in Athens under pressure from the Allies, Greece declares war on the Central Powers, ending three years of neutrality by entering World War I alongside Britain, France, Russia and Italy.
  • China

    They were with the Allies. As World War I enters its fourth year, China abandons its neutrality and declares war on Germany.
