    In 401 Alaric invaded Italy, but he was defeated by the Roman half-Vandal general, Stilicho at Pollentia in April 402. Along Roman roads, Alaric attacked the cities of Aquileia and Cremona and damaged lands along the Adriatic Sea. The Visigothic leader laid siege upon Rome in 408. Eventually, the Senate granted him a substantial subsidy. Alaric forced the Senate to liberate 40,000 Gothic slaves in Rome.

First, they reached Main (river) where Silingis and Alani joined their army but the Vandals were attacked by a Frankish tribe. King Godigisel was killed and the Alani army routed the Franks. They crossed the river where they conquered cities in Gaul leaving devastation among the land. The Alemanni conquered Worms, Speier, and Strassburg.

The slaves opened Rome’s gates allowing Visigoths to loot Rome. The Visigoth’s plundered the Rome’s important structures, leaving Rome in a terrible state. Even some Romans were taken captive such as the emperor’s sister. Thousands left the city to go to the countryside or Africa.

Pope Leo I opened the gates to Rome and Genseric disobeyed his agreement and destroyed cultural objects, looted treasure and took Eudoxia hostage. Maximus was killed by a Roman mob. Eudocia married Huneric and captives from Rome were sent to Africa and sold into slavery.

    Link Orestes deposes Julius Nepos and puts his own son Romulus Augustulus in the throne. Julius Nepos left to Dalmatia as the Western Emperor. Julius makes Odacer the magister militum and he invades Italy defeats Orestes and dethrones Romulus Augustulus. Odacer names himself ruler of Italy and asks Zeno (Eastern emperor) to be emperor of both empires. Romulus Augustulus was the last Western Roman Emperor and his deposition indicates the fall of Ancient Rome.

Valens was the Roman Empire at the time and he allowed the Visigoths to settle south of the Danube. The Huns had invaded their land. Ostrogoths also migrated into Roman territory, and conflict with the Romans gave way to open fighting. Defeat occurred so quickly.
