    Battle of Gonzales

    Mexican soldiers wanted to retrieve a cannon loaned to colonists for protections from the Native Americans. The Texas colonists chose not to return the cannon and taunted the Mexican soldiers with the Come and Take It flag. This sparked the beginning of the Revolution.

    Capture of Bexar

    Milam and Johnson successfully captured the town of San Antonio de Bexar after five days of fighting. This allowed for the control of the Alamo to shift to the Texans.

    Texans were caught by surprise by Santa Anna when he arrived with his army on February 23, 1836. Commander Travis shot at Santana with a cannon and refused to give up. It started a 13 day fight in which 189 Texas men perished.

    Commander Travis wrote a letter to plead for reinforcements to come to the Alamo. He pledged to fight to the death. Troops were sent by March 1st but they were still outnumbered.

    This convention was held to create the Texas Constitution and Declaration of Independence. It was held at Washington on the Brazos. There were 59 elected men chosen to make these decisions. Burnet is decided as the interim president.

    General Santa Anna led a surprise attack on the Alamo at 5 am at the objection of other officers. Supplies were low and within 90 minutes Santa Anna had claimed the fort. With no justification for the attack, some soldiers refused to harm unarmed men.

    With the Texas army increasing, Santa Anna ordered and prisoners to be shot. Those taken in as prisoners of the Battle of Coleto and Refugio were delivered to Presidio at La Bahia in Goliad and executed. There were between 400 and 500 soldiers executed at this time.

    Battle of San Jacinto

    Sam Houston led a surprise attack on a napping Mexican Army. Santa Anna escaped until the next morning. The battle only lasted 18 minutes in which over 600 Mexicans were killed and over 700 were taken prisoner.

    Treaty of Velsaco

    Santa Anna was taken to Velasco, Texas to sign a treaty stating that he would never fight against Texas. This would end the revolution and start the evacuation of Mexican soldiers from Texas.

    Sam Houston was the first elected President of Texas. The votes were 5,119 got Houston, 743 for Smith and 587 for Austin. Texans approved of the constitution and supported the annexation to the United States.

    Opened to make good of the promises to Texans who were promised land. This led to issues of violence and fraud. The government was pulled into a 1.5 million dollar debt. This also contributed to the financial Panic of 1837.

    After the French recognized Texas as an independent nation in 1839, Texas soon realized that being part of the United States was beneficial to both parties. In 1844, Houston submits an annexation question to Texas Congress and starts the annexation talks with the United States again.

    James Henderson was elected the state Governor on December 15, 1845. President Polk signed the Texas Admission Act on December 19, 1845. On February 19, 1846 state representatives met for a ceremony to complete the Annexation.
