    The Texans marched back to Goliad and held for a week. Men who could walk were divided into three columns and marched out of the compound. Some hoped they were being sent home. Instead, the guards began shooting all but a handful who escaped durinf the confusion. The rest of the men, including Fannin, were excuted later.

    Many of the men were farmers or ranchers who had work to do at home. Since no fighting was taking place, they returned home to their families. To make matters worse, the Texans humiliated themselves at what became known as the Grass Fight.

    After a brief exchange of fire in the morning, Fannin surrendered his command. The surviving Texas soldiers were taken captive by the Meican army.

    The major part of the battle took place in the afternoon. At first, Houston's troops of about 800 outnumbered Santa Anna's army. During the night and morning, Santa Anna received reinforcements, swelling his ranks to more than 1,300 soldiers. The battle lasted about 18 minutes.
