    Age Of Exploration

    Age Of Exploration
    Europeans decided to explore America to search for God, Gold and Glory. Columbus found America, but he was actually looking for a shorter route to the far east (Asia). Most explorers were from Spain, Portugal and France. These people are called conquistadors, A conquistador is a warrior and a person who conquers new land. Hernán Cortés tore down Tenochtitlan and founded New Spain.

    Pineda Maps Texas Coast
    Alonso Álvarez de Pineda gave Spain a claim to Texas, his exploration lead to other Spaniards exploring Texas. He also discovered the strait to the Pacific Ocean while also discovering that Florida isn't a island. His route started in Corpus Christi he went through the gulf of mexico, he then was at florida and finished and ended up in Jamaica.

    Cabeza De Vaca

    Cabeza De Vaca
    In 1528, Cabeza had wrecked his ship on Galveston, the Karankawa Indians captured and enslaved Cabeza and some more of his men. Many Indians and explorers died from disease and from fighting each other. After returning to Spain, Cabeza told people about his experience. They saw hence of the treasures in the 7 cities of cibola, in which they thought Texas was a land of wealth.

    Coronado sets out for Cibola

    Cornado was a conquistador and explorer that set out to find the 7 cities of Cibola. There were many rumors or stories about treasure in the land north of Mexico, Texas, so Coronado decided to look there. Although, Coronado never found Cibola he did find the Grand Canyon on his expedition.
  • La Salle lands in Texas

    France began challenging Spain for Texas. La salle was an explorer for France and he found the Mississippi river delta.
  • Fort St. Louis founded

    Fort St. Louis was established near Matagourda bay and Arenosa creek in Texas, Fort St. Louis was a French colony established in 1685 by explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle. The fort failed from disease and Indians. La salle had later died from mutiny.
  • Mission San Francisco founded

    The Spanish missions were built to colonize the territory of Alta California. The purpose was to convert native Americans to Catholicism. Friars and priests would usually have been the leaders. The country who built these missions was Mexico. The religion was Christianity in the missions. The mission system failed, it failed because Texas by that time lived well with only a few colonies so Spaniards moved south and had more success. The Spanish royal administration protected the mission.
  • Marques de Rubi Inspects Texas

    Marques De Rubi was sent to write a report on the missions. He was sent by King Carlos, he was also successful and made 2 recommendations. To add more protection and reorganize it, also to abandon Spain in east Texas.
  • Philip Nolan Expedition

    Phillip Nolan was a filibuster, a fillibuster is some one who goes against a country. Along with Nolan there was Col. James Long and Father Hidalgo. They all were against Mexico. Another one was Jean Laffite, he was a pirate and a privateer.
  • Moses Austin Asks for a Colony

    Moses asked to have a land grant and later got a colony from Mexico. He wanted to develop the land. Before he was able to establish the land he was robbed and killed.
  • Stephen F. Austin Establishes His Colony

    An empresario is a person who has the right to settle on Mexican land whilst the person has to be recruiting and taking responsibility for new settlers. SFA established his colony in Mexican Texas near the brazos river. The settlers did have some rules and they had to convert to catholism. The old 300 were families that were the first to be in a colony. Some challenges were SFA having to get another land grant from Mexico. Other empressarios were Haeden Edwards and Green DeWitt.
  • Mexico Gains Indepence

    Mexico gained independence from Spain. Federalist established the constitution in 1824. Therefore Texas and Coahila were joined together.
  • Fredonian Rebellion

    The Fredonian Rebellion, was the first attempt by Anglo settlers in Texas to be cut off from Mexico. The Edwards brothers were upset with the Mexican Government. The people who were inthe rebellion flew and the Mexican government cancelled the rebellion.
  • Law of April, 6 1830

    New laws were passed on April 6, 1830, such as Texans having to pay export and import taxes, Americans couldn't move to Texas anymore, any Mexicans who came to Texas would get benefits, Texas couldn't bring anymore slaves, convicts could come and start building fortifications.
  • Convention of 1833

    The convention was a meeting between the Texan settlers who were writing petitions for the Mexican government, whilst SFA was the one who delivered the petitions.
  • Stephen Austin Arrested

    On December 1833, Stephen F. Austin was coming back home and was arrested on his way back and was brought back to Mexico City. Stephen F. Austin spent 10 years in counseling because he was thought as a suspect trying to encourage a revolution in Texas. He was held with no charges in a Mexican prison for a year but didnt have a trial.
  • Battle of Gonzales

    Texas and Mexico faught because the Texans refused to give up mexicos cannon that they were given. Texas won, and women from the colony made a flag during this which said, come and take it.
  • San Antonio de Bexar Siege

    A siege is when the enemy surrounds you to make you surrender because they are cut or running low on supplies. Mexico had control on San antonio befor the siege but the Texans had control after.

    The Alamo Falls

    William B. Travis, Davy Crockett, and James Bowie defended the Alamo. There were around 200 defenders for the Alamo. There were 1,500 troops in the Mexican army. The Mexican army also won the battle.Sam Houston didn't want to waste any men on a battle he knew would lose.

  • The Runaway Scrape

    Every one was moving east to Louisiana because, Santa Anna executed all of the prisoners and announced his plans to kill everyone who opposed the Mexican government. The goal was to cross the Sabine River into Louisiana before they were killed.
    People though Sam Houston was a coward therefore they were unhappy.
  • Goliad Massacre

    Fannin and his men lost the battle of Coleto and were taken prisoner. Santa Anna ordered to execute Fannin and his men in the massacre, only 342 men survived.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    Lands were claimed by 3 countries: Spain, France and the U.S. France and the U.S knew Spain would try and take control and power.
  • Mier y Teran Report

    Mier Y Teran went to Texas to report on the colonies, It was reccomending closer ties with Mexico, have more garrisons around settlements, and encourage more euro and Mexican settlers.
  • Battle of San Jacinto

    Remember the Alamo and remember goliad were 2 important cries in the battle. 630 Mexicans died, 9 Texans died. Santa Anna tried to escape and failed, the Texans were victorious.
