Austin becomes the capital of Texas

1839

This occurred under the second president of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar.

Texas annexed to the United States

1846

This event occurred under the administration of President James Polk.

The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo & end of U.S Mexican War

1848

This treaty established boundaries between Mexico and the United States.

The First Railroad is established

1853

The United States needed reliable transportation and a way to transport goods. This led to the construction of the first railroad in Texas known as the "Harrisburg Railroad."

Texas joined Confederacy-Civil War began

1860

The Union proved victorious 4 years later.

Buffalo Soldiers first posted in Texas

1873

The U.S Army black troops were stationed throughout Texas (the Southwest and Great Plains). The Native Americans gave them the name "Buffalo Soldiers."

Texas Railroad Commission Established

1891

This was established to oversee rates and operations of railroads.

Texas Equal Rights Association is formed

1893

The first woman's suffrage organization and was organized by Rebecca Henry Hays of Galveston.
