    Phillip Nolan
    Phillip Nolan was a rancher that came to Texas in the 1790s looking for wild horses. He made detailed maps of Texas and gave them to the US Government, which greatly worried Spain. He was killed by Spain on March 21,1800.

    Miguel Costilla
    Costilla was a priest who later became a general of a rebellion. He ordered all native Spaniards in Dolores to be arrested. He was executed on July 31, 1811.

    Augustus Magee
    Augustus Magee was a young officer in the US Army during the War of 1812. He later led the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition to conquer Texas. He died yound of malaria.

    Jose Gutierrez de Lara
    de Lara was a general in the first, failed, Mexican Rebellion. He went to many countries as a diplomat to try to secure help for the Mexicans. He helped lead the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition of 1813.

    The bloodiest battle in Texas history was the Battle of Medina. Republican forces under Jose Dubois took on the Spanish royalists under Joaquin de Arredondo. The Republican army was decimated. Only 100 of them survived.

    Jean Lafitte, born in France, was a naval commander. He commanded the Gavleston area, working for the Mexicans. The Americans drove him out in 1821.

    James Long served for the USA in the War of 1812. Long and other conspirators entered a US plot to take over Texas. He was later arrested, and killde, supposedly an accident, by a guard

    This act determined who could live in Texas. They seperated the immigrants into 3 catagories. Anglos, Europeans, and Mexicans. This grew Mexico to discourage its leniant immigration policy.

    The State Colonization Law strictly defined what settlers could and could not do. The could not live near a international boundary without government approval. A settler could also own only a certain amount of land.

    The Mexican Constitution, ratified in 1824, established the laws and freedoms of Mexico. Like the USA, Mexico had two houses of Congress, which met annually. Americans were not represented in Texas.
