President Mirabeau Lamar sent an expedition to gain control of Santa Fe, led by Jose Navarro. The expedition failed because Mexican troops intecepted the group of Texans and captured them. Navarro and his group were released from Mexican prison in 1844.

President Houston had wanted to move the archives in Austin to Houston (In case Austin was attacked). Vigalantes, who feared the capital would be moved to Houston, intercepted the archives and they were sent back to Austin.
