Stages of Language Development

  • Birth

    LAD- (language acquisition device)-In Chomsky's theory, an innate system containing universal grammar, or set of rules common to all languages that enables children to understand and speak"
  • 2 months

    Cooing/babbling - vowel like noises such as "oooo". At 6 months babbling appears with vowel combinations such as "nananana" or "babababa"
  • 3 months

    Responds to voices, especially mothers. Makes cooing sounds.
    Infant Directed Speech(IDS)-A form of communication used by adults to speak to infants and toddlers, consisting of short sentences with high-pitched, exaggerated expression, clear pronunciation, distinct pauses, clear gestures and repetition(p.240)
  • 18-24 months

    Spurt in vocabulary- adding 2-3 words a day. Forms short sentences. Verbalizes needs.
  • 6-9 months

    Responds to their own name. Imitates sounds like clicking, coughing.
  • 12 months

    First Words said. (2-8 word vocabulary)Imitates animal sounds.
  • 2 years old

    Telegraphic Speech- Two word utterances that focus on high content words, omitting less important ones (pg. 238)
    Forms short sentences,
    verbalizes for food, drink, and bathroom.
    Enjoys singing.
  • 3 years old

    Asks a lot of questions.
    Talks in full sentences.
    Says sounds a,m,b,p,n,l,w.
  • 4 years old

    Asks questions "who, what, where".
    Says sounds d,g,f,k,y.
  • 5 years old

    Speaks clearly.
    Says complete sentences.

    Pragmatics 6-12 years old

    The communicative side of language. Can read and write.
    Opportunities to communicate in many situations with a variety of people help children refine these skills (pg.456)
