    In 1519 Pineda sailed along the Texas coast.
    He created the first map.
    Him and his men were the first Europeans to explore and map the gulf littoral between the areas previously explored by Juan Ponce De León and Diego Velázquez

    Cabeza de Vaca

    Cabeza de Vaca
    In 1529 Cabeza de Vaca was headed on a journey, but while on his journey most of his men died .
    They finally arrived in Galveston, Texas.
    From 1529 to 1534 Cabeza de Vaca and his remaining crew lived a meagre life with the Karankawa Indians and was captured and traded by other tribes as slaves.
    During this time since Cabeza knew little about medicine he took advantage of that and was remade as a healer they named him "medicine man."
  • Corpus Christi de la Ysleta

    Corpus Christi de la Ysleta
    The Ysleta Mission is the oldest mission in Texas. They founded this mission in 1682.
    In 1693 the church was renamed Corpus Christi de los Tiguas de Ysleta by Governor Diego de Vargas under the authority of King Charles ll of Spain.
    The site was poorly chosen the nearby Rio Grande flooded and changed course frequently
  • La Salle

    La Salle
    His full name is René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.
    He was a French explorer and he was known for trying to lead an expedition down the Mississippi River and he claimed Louisiana for the French.
    He actually missed the Mississippi River and landed near th Matagorda Bay, Texas.
    Because of his new French settlement, Spain hurried to build more missions throughout the area.
    When most of the men died a second team set out.
    A few months later a group of his men attacked and killed him.

    On 1694 the first Spanish mission in East Texas, San Francisco de la Tejas was founded.
    A Franciscan priest came to what is now Houston County and established a mission on San Pedro creek.
    While in East Texas the priest encountered the Nabedache Indians.
    The Indians were peaceful and welcomed the priests.
    The Indians willingly celebrated the catholic rights.
    The Indians blamed the priests for bringing sickness into their tribe.
    The Spanish were forced to go home and they burned the mission down
