    February 1898 was when the idea of imperialism really hit the U.S. and when the battle ship Maine exploded many people saw it as in opportunity to declare war with Spain so we could increase power and markets.

  • Battle Ship Maine Explodes

    Battle Ship Maine Explodes
    The battleship Maine was the spark that started the fire between Spain and the U.S. The battleship Maine was sent to Havana to protect U.S. citizens from anti-Spanish rioters. Unfortunately the Spanish and the U.S. already had plenty of hostile encounters and when the Maine mysteriously exploded on February 15th, it caused many U.S. citizens to have a disdain for the Spanish occupants of the Americas.

    In early April, Spain announced an armistice which limited the right of Cuba to self-government, but soon afterward the U.S. recognized Cuba's right to independence and demanded the withdrawal of Spain's armed forces. Spain denied this ultimatum demanded by the U.S. and formally declared war on the U.S. on April 24th 1898, and one day after the U.S. declares war on Spain.

    Battle of Cienfuegos
    The battle of Cienfuegos was one of the first battles of the Spanish American war. America found out how the Spanish were communicating with Spain and the rest of Cuba and the U.S. sent 3 ships to cut of this communication. The U.S. ships fired at the underwater cable trying to destroy it but to no avail. This battle resulted in minimal casualties but nonetheless a Spanish victory.

    A battle that was fought from June 6th to the 10th American and Cuban forces seized the strategically and commercially important harbor of Gauntànamo Bay.
  • Battle of San Juan Hill

    Battle of San Juan Hill
    In July U.S. forces marched on the hills of San Juan and Kettle. The Rough riders split up and marched on Kettle Hill, unfortunately due to the difficulty transporting their horses, they had to abandon them and continue on foot. After the Americans took the hill, they looked upon Santiago and began the siege of the city in the following days.

    The battle of Santiago de Cuba occurred on July 3rd, 1898, and was a major naval battle between the U.S. and Spanish navies. This naval battle was the decisive victory the U.S. needed to secure their victory over the Spanish forces in Cuba.
