This event is important in Cuban-American relations because when America attempted to buy Cuba, Spain said they would rather see the island sink than sell it to the US. This shows our long interest in Cuba 40 years before the Spanish American War broke out. It also shows how the two countries didn't get along with this territory. -
Yellow Press Began to Shape American Opinion
Yellow Press started in 1895 after a rivalry between two newspaper companies. One company started the comic the Yellow Kid. Yellow Press was very important in the war because it shaped American's opinion on the Cuban rebellion and sympathized with them. This brought America into the war with Spain. Jose Marti was a Cuban nationalist, philosopher, professor, etc. Jose Marti is known as a national hero because of his part in the liberation of his country away from Spain. In 1895 he led the second war for independence, and in doing so he died in battle. This is important because with someone that is able to control the Cubans it made the country more organized and ready for a conflict. -

The De Lome letter was a note written by the Spanish ambassador of the United States Señor Don Enrique Dupuy de Lôme. to Don José Canalejas, the Foreign Minister of Spain is who he sent the letter. This letter reveals the Opinion of the Spanish involvement in Cuba and US President McKinley’s diplomacy. This is significant because without this letter the opinion of the relationship between Cuba and the United States made the public infuriated. -
Explosion of the USS Maine
President Mckinley ordered the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to home American citizens in danger from the fighting and to protect American property. The ship blew up in the harbor of Havana. More than 260 men were killed. This is important because it helped start a war. -
