Space Mission Timeline

  • Viking 1-2

It Orbited Mars. Its purpose was to take pictures and explore the surface of Mars. It learned more about it's atmosphere, valcanoes and water's affect on the planet. And they looked for a sign of life but didn't find any.
  • Voyager 1-2

Going to Saturn and Jupiter. It's purpose was to get in the middle of our solar system and explore and learn about other planets and their moons. It explored 48 moons, Saturn, and Jupiter.
  • Magellan

Went to Venus. It's purpose was to take images of the surface. It found volcanic features on the surface.
  • Galileo

Went to Jupiter. It's purpose was to take pictures of Jupiter and orbit it's atmosphere. It gave us a better understanding of Jupiter's atmosphere and magnetosphere.
  • Mars Global Surveyor

Went to Mars. It's purpose was to take pictures of Mars. It discovered a source of water in Mars.
  • Mars Pathfinder

Went to the surface of Mars. It's purpose for a conecept for us in future mars missions. It investigated Mars's atmosphere, meteorology, geology, form, and structure.
  • Cassini

It orbits Saturn. Used to study Saturn. Discovered more about its rings, icy satellites, magnetosphere, and titan.
  • Spirit and Opportunity Rovers

Went to Mars. Studied its rocks and soil to learn about Mars past water activity. The Spirit rover landed on the Gusev crater which they discovered was about 3 billion to 4 billion years old. The Oppotunity rover landed on a flat plain called Meridiani Planum.
