    Tripled the territory of his state, and ended the Golden Horde dominance over the Rus. He laid foundations of the Russian states, and ruled until 1504

    Ivan III (The Terrible)
    Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 until he died. Transformed Russia into a multiethnic state being almost a billion acres. Changed to an empire and emerging in regional power and was the first ruler who was Tsar of all Russia. He ruled until 1584.
  • Michael Romanov

    Michael Romanov
    First Russian Tsar of Romanov lived from 1596 to 1645. He suffered from a leg injury caused by a horse accident when he was a young child, so he could walk towards the end of his life. His counselors ranged from good honest men to corrupted evil men. He ruled until 1645.
  • Peter I (The Great)

    Peter I (The Great)
    He created a regular army and navy for Russia, announced new territorial divisions for Russia, proclaimed Russia an empire, and became the Emperor of All Russia. He ruled until 1725.
  • Catherine II (The Great)

    Catherine II (The Great)
    She ended restrictions on commerce to promote trade between other countries, and extended Russian borders South and West, adding 200,000 square miles to Russia. She also acted as a mediator in disagreements between other countries, preventing wars. Her personal collection of art is throughout the Winter Palace, and encouraged European education for Russian children.She ruled until 1796.
  • Alexander II

    After Russia had lost the Crimean War, he sold Alaska to the United States, so Russia would no longer have to defend it against the British. He also planned for a network of railroads to be built to develop natural resources and for military defense. One of his major acts as tsar, was when he emancipated serfdom, a modified slavery, in Russia. He ruled until 1881.
  • Nicholas II

    Nicholas II
    While he ruled, Russia was defeated by the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War, and got Russia involved WWI. After the loss in the Russo-Japanese War, Russia lost all prestige and power. He was called the “soul-murderer of the Russian empire." He ruled until 1917.
  • Alexander Kerensky

    He was a leader in the February Revolution, and he became the first Minister of Justice in Russia.
  • Vladimir Lenin

    Vladimir Lenin
    He was one of the founding fathers of the Soviet Union, and established it. He also led a successful revolution, creating the world’s first Marxist nation. He was in power until 1924.
  • Joseph Stalin

    Joseph Stalin
    He helped defeat Germany in World War II, industrialized the Soviet Union, spread communism, boosted their economy, and began radioactive studies in the USSR. He was in power until 1953.
  • Nikita Khrushchev

    Nikita Khrushchev
    He began to reform the country, gave the “Secret Speech”, began the Virgin Lands Campaign, which ploughed fresh land in the steppe, saw the launch of Sputnik. He was in power until 1964.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev

    Mikhail Gorbachev
    He tried to reduce tensions between western countries after the Cold War by improving relations and trade. He also ended the communist supremacy in Russia and ended the USSR, which led to him earning a Nobel Prize. He was in power until 1991.
  • Boris Yeltsin

    Boris Yeltsin
    He led Russian troops to end a rebellion, and fired the entire cabinet to replace them. He was in power until 1999.
  • Vladimir Putin

    Vladimir Putin
    He made the politics in Russia more stable, restored the territorial boundaries after the second Chechen War, and helped the economy grow, by increasing salaries and GDP and lowering the poverty rate. He also affirmed Russia to be an energy superpower. He was in power until 2000.
  • Dmitri Medvedev

    Dmitri Medvedev
    He modernized Russia’s economy and society, launched an anti-corruption campaign, and made relations between Russia and the United States better with the START treaty. He was in power until 2008.
  • Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev

    Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev
    Prince of Novgorod, fled to Scandinavia in 976, then came back with an army and conquered Novgorod from his brother Yaropolk in 980.
