Japan retaliated by attacking the Russians at Port Arthur, Manchuria. News of Russian losses sparked unrest at home and led to a revolt in the midst of war.

    Bloody Sunday
    200,000 Wokrers and families approached the czar's palace in St. Petersburg. They had a petition for better working conditions, more personal freedom and an elected national legislature. Nicholas II's generals ordered soldiers to fire upon the crowd. Over 1,000 Russians wounded and several hundred were killed. That day was then on known as "bloody Sunday"

    Duma- Russias first parliament. Duma meets for the first time. Leaders were moderates who wanted Russia to become a constitutional monarchy, similar to Britain. Czar hesitated to share his power so he decided to dissolve the Duma after only ten weeks.

    Russia decided to go into WWI eventough they were not economicly ready and did not have a large enough military to enter. 4 million Russians were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. The involment in WWI revealed many weaknesses of the Czarist rule and military leadership.

    Women textile workers led a citywide strike. 200,000 workers flood the streets cheering " down with the war". In the next five days, riots flared over bread and fueal shortages. Soldeirs were orders to shoot upon the riots, at first soldeirs obeyed then later joined the riots.

    Armed factory workers stormed the Winter Palace in Petrogrand, they called themselves the Bolshevik Red Guards and took over gov. officers and aressted leaders. I was a strike to show that they had power.

    Russia signed a treaty (the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk) that surrendered large pices of land to Germany and there allies. Russia was left in hummiliation.
