Workers in Russia had been organizing themselves with the goal of more economic equality. They were lead by Georgry Gafon. They marched to the winter palace to present their demands and requests to the czar. On this day Nicholas gained the nickname "Bloody Nicholas". Many people died and were killed. About 15 million people served in the Russian army, but about 1.8 million were killed, 2.8 million were wounded, and 2.4 million were taken as prisoner.
