    In the late 1800's Russia and Japan competed for control of Korea and Manchuria. The two nations signed a series of agreements over the territories, but Russia broke them. Japan retailiated by attacking the Russians at Port Arthur, Manchuria on this day. News of the repeated Russian losses sparked unrest at home and led to a revolt in the midst of the war.

    1, 2, 3, Shoot!
    This event was a petition asking for better working conditions, more personal freedom, and an elected national legislature. Nicholas II's generals ordered soldiers to fire, which led to more than 1,000 wounded and several hundred killed. Because of all the casualties, that's where the name "Bloody Sunday" came into place. This provoked a wave of strikes and voilence that spread across the country.

    Nicolas promised more freedom. He approved the creation of Dume, Russia's first parliament. It's leaders were moderates who wanted Russia to become a constitutional monarchy similar to Britain. Nicolas was hesitant to share his power, so the czar dissolved the Duma after 10 weeks.

    Nicolas II dragged Russia into World War I. Russia was unprepared to handle the military and economic costs. Its weak generals and poorly equipped troops were no match for the German army. German machine guns mowed down advancing Russians by the thousands. In less than a year, more than four million Russian soldiers were killed, wounded, or taken prisoner.

    Russia and Germany signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovski. Russia surrendered a larger part of it's territory to Germany and it's allies.
