  • Port Arthur attacked

    Port Arthur attacked
    Russia and Japan fought for control over Manchuria and Korea in the late 1800s. The two countries agreed to stop the fighting and signed an agreement on what to do about the terrritories. Unfortunetly Russia broke the agreement, resulting in Japan attacking Port Arthur, Manchuria. Russia was not ready for this attack and unfortunetly lost the battle. When news got to the civilians that Russia was defeated, civilians got very fustrated that Russia kept on losing battles.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Roughly 200,000 workers approached the czar's palace with a petition asking for better working conditions, an elected legislature and more personal freedom. Nicholas II ordered soilders to shoot at the crowd. As a result of this violent day, numerous strikes and waves of violence spread across the country.

    The first parliament of Russia, the Duma, met and discussed Russia becoming a constitutional monarchy just like Britain. The Czar did not like this idea because he felt like he would lose a lot of his power, as a result the Duma only lasted ten weeks.

    Nicholas II made the decision to drag Russia in to World War I, despite how unprepared Russia's military was. They were no match for Germany. After a year many of Russia's troops were deceased and Russia was defeated.

    Woman fighting for rights
    Women textile workers led a strike through the city of Petrograd. The strike resulted in five days of riots. Close to 200,000 workers joined in on the riots. Soldiers were ordered to shoot at the rioters but soon disobeyed the commands and sided on the side of the rioters.

    Without warning armed factory workers, who called themselves the Bolshevik Red Guards, stormed the Winter palace in Petrograd. They arrested leaders of the provisional government and took over government offices. They distributed farm land to the peasants and gave the workers control of the factories

    The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
    Russia and Germany sign the Treatu of Brest-Litovsk. Russia surrenders a good amount of land to the Germans. Many Russian people were not happy with this treaty and it is one of the causes for the upcoming civil war.

    The white army was made up of the people who supported the return of the czar to return to power and they fought against the Bolsheviks who was the red army. Over fourteen million people will die over the course of the war. Western states including the US, will help in little ways. The red army will win making the Bolskeviks in control.

    Lenin put aside the idea of a state-controlled government. They then changed the government type to Capitalism. The govenment would now only control major industries and not small buisnesses or private ownerships.

    The RIse to Power
    Just before Lenin dies, the general secretary Joseph Stalin, moves his way up in the Communist party. Lennin knew he was trouble and didn't want him having any power. After Lenin dies Stalin becomes a dictator of Russia.
