    2 million peasants died of starvation. Russia continued to export grain a move which was seen as controversial in the light of the famine and led to the dismissal of Vyshnegradsky.
  • Tsar Nicholas comes to power

    Nicholas II replaces Alexander III who died in 1894
  • Tsar Nicholas marries Alexandra

    Nicholas married Alix of Hesse, grand daughter of Queen Victoria. She had converted to Russian Orthodoxy and taken the name Alexandra Feodorovna.
  • Lenin exiled

    Lenin was exiled to Siberia by the secret police.
  • Lenin released from exile

    Lenin was released from exile and made his way to Switzerland
  • Russia Japanese war

    The Russo Japanese War broke out when Japanese forces attacked and lay siege to Port Arthur on the Liadong Peninsular which had been leased to Russia by the Chinese. The Japanese had designs on the regions of Manchuria and Korea as areas to expand their own territory.
  • Defeat in the war

    Port Arthur fell to the Japanese and the Treaty of Portsmouth was signed on September 5th 1905
  • Bloody Sunday

    in 1905, a peaceful demonstration of workers led by Father Gapon were attacked by the Cossacks and this led to strikes and riots. More than 200 demonstrators were killed and more than 500 injured. Father Gapon escaped and left Russia. The event, known as Bloody Sunday sparked a series of revolts known as the 1905 Revolution.
  • October Manifesto

    He published the 'October Manifesto', which promised to create a Duma . This caused many middle-class people, called the Octobrists, to support him. He also lowered taxes on the poor and brought in Peter Stolypin as his prime minister. The Okhrana tracked down and arrested many revolutionaries.
