    Under the rule of Alexander and Nicholas II Russia became industrialized. In the 1890's, Nicholas II and the government of Russia focused on economic development. Railroads and factories were built. Also, the Trans-Siberian railroad was constructed,
  • Russo-Japanese War

    A war between the Russian Empire and Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. Japan defeated Russia and Tsar NIcholas II lost prestige and two naval fleets. This was the first non-European power to defeat a European power.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Russian workers attempted to petition Czar NIcholas II for better working conditions, freedoms, and a representative government. The Czar troops fire on the petitioners and kill several hundred. This event demonstrated the socioeconomic problems suffered by the average Russians and unwillingness of the monarchy to return.

    Russia in World War I
    Russia did not have adequate arms or surgeons for the war. the casualties were large as many soldiers died from wounds. The first war took a toll on Russia as food prices were driven up and soldiers left the army.

    Czar Nicholas II Steps Down
    In 1914, Nicholas II led Russia in World War I. The war left Russia with little food and many casualties. The war showed Nicholas II as ineffective leader and in March 1917 he was forced to abdicate. Later on his family was executed.
  • March Revolution

    March Revolution
    Thousands of workers went on strike demanding more money so that they could buy food. The Russian Parliament asked for emergency food supplies to be released to cease the riots, but Nicholas refused. The Russian Parliament (durma) decided to side with the rioters and Nicholas stepped down from being the Tsar of Russia.

    Lenin Returns to Russia
    Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevik Party returns to Russia from exile. Germany allows this to happen as they let Lenin pass into Russia in a sealed railway car. Lenin siezes control of Russia and his Bolsheviks party won a majority in the Petrograd soviet.

    October Revolution
    The second revolution of 1917. Vladimir Lenin, seized power of Russia and destroyed the tradition of csarist rule. The Bolsheviks party became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
  • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

    Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
    A peace treaty signed between the Bolshevik government of Soviet Russia and the Central Powers. The treaty stopped Russia's involvement in World War I. In the treaty, Russia gave the baltic states to Germany.
  • Lenin in Power

    Lenin in Power
    Lenin took over the government and signed a treaty with Germany to take Russia out of the war. After Russia was out of the war, a civil war broke out between the communists and anti-communists. Lenin and the communists won. This left Russia for Lenin's rule. Soon after Lenin became ruler he died in 1924.
