The Decembrist Revolt took place in imperial Russia. Led by ~3,000 soldiers in a protest against Nicholas I. He had assumed the throne after his brother, Constantine, had removed himself from the line of succession. The protest was quickly ended. The name "Decembrists" was coined due to the fact that the protest occurred in December.

Nicholas succeeds his father after he passes away from liver disease (though he has no interest in becoming Tsar).

Russia and Japan's relationship had already been very tense. Russia wanted to continue to expand to the east and Japan viewed this as threatening. Because of this, Japan and Russia went to war. Russia was defeated multiple times by Japan but Tsar Nicholas II believed that now things would be different.

Protestors marched on the Winter Palace. They had gone to present a petition to the Tsar. There, they are shot at and killed by soldiers. Many people were outraged at the Tsar's actions and this played a large role in the Russian Revolution.

Due to the many defeats, Tsar Nicholas II decided it was best to save himself from any further embarrasment and the war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth (which was mediated by Theodore Roosevelt). This was the time when many observers around the world started to recognize Japan as a world power.

A riot that was focused around Petrograd. During the riots, the Duma assumed control of the country and formed a Provisional government.

Tsar Nicholas II abdicates the throne after riots break out. He had lost the loyalty of his people due to his poor leadership skills.

After Tsar Nicholas II leaves the throne, there is a power struggle between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks.

The Red and White armies had been fighting over who would obtain power over Russia. The Red army won and Russia adopted communism.

The USSR is formed by Vladimir Lenin. He assumes the role of Prime Minister of the Soviet Union.

It is believed that Lenin died from a stroke, but new evidence suggests that he may have died of syphilis.
