The Russo-Japanese War was going on at the time and the 2 nations signed agreements over the territories, but russia broke Japan. Japan retaliated by attacking the Russians at Port Arthur, Manchuria.

    About 200,000 Russian workers and their families marched to the Czar's winter palace carrying a petition. The petition was for better working conditions. More than 1,000 were wounded and hundreds were killed.

    The first Duma met in May, 1906. Leaders were moderates who wanted Russia to become a constitutional monarch, like Britan. But the Czar was hesitant to share his power, so he dissolved the Duma after 10 weeks.

    Lenin temporarily put aside his plan for a state-controlled economy and instead resorted to small scale version of Capitalism. He called it The New Economic Policy (NEP). The changes in the policy allowed for peasants to sell their supply of crops instaed of turning them to the government. The policy also allowed the government to keep control of the major industries and means of communication, but it allowed small factories, shops, and farms to be privatly owned.

    Alot of events happened in 1922. Lenin suffered a stroke, but he survived, and the incident set in motion competition for heading up the Communist Party. Joseph Stalin was one of the two notable men to take over. Stalin was cold, hard, and impersonal.

    This was also when the country was named the Soviet Union.
