  • Mensheviks and Bolsheviks

    Formation of two groups, the Mensheviks and Bolsheviks. The Mensheviks focused on winning over the masses to start the revolution. The Bolsheviks were more radical and required an immediate revolution.
  • Russo-Japanese war

    Russia lost the dispute over Manchuria to Japan. This was the last straw with economic chaos as well as international humiliation. it shook national confidence in their progress and rule of the Czar.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    A group of protestors begging the Czar for help were fired by the Czar's troops. This killed 130 people and injured hundreds of them. Many previous supporters of the Czar began to doubt his ability to rule a nation.
  • October manifesto

    the tsar introduced the October manifesto, which provided civil rights and established the Duma. Although this helped the Tsar gain power, he failed to fulfill most of his promises, leading him back to a very unpopular government.
  • World war I

    Without the people's support, Russia enters World War I. Russia was facing many political, social and economic difficulties. The war only made people more desperate for a revolution.
  • February/March revolution

    February/March revolution
    A series of protests resulted in the abolition of the Monarchy in Russia. Tsar Nicholas abdicated and the Duma set up a provisional government, which failed to solve Russia's problems since it lacked legitimacy because it was not elected by the people. Lenin went back to Russia and wrote "April Thesis", which gave power to the Soviets.
  • Bolshevik revolution

    Once Lenin and the Bolsheviks came to power they ordered all farmland to be divided by the peasants and gave control of factories to the workers. Russia and Germany signed a treaty which gave a large piece of Russian territory to Germany. This stopped the fighting between Russia and Germany.

    The white armies (Mensheviks) attack the reds (Bolsheviks). Lenin and the Bolsheviks(reds) win.

    Lenin died. Stalin and Trotsky started differing their ideas. Stalin became a dictator.
