    Nicholas II Cowned Tsar of Russia
    Nicholas II was crowned in May 1896 after his fathers death. Tsar Nicholas was not a good tsar, he was not well trained and not ready to be a tsar. For example, he created a thing called the Okhrana which was his secret police. The people did not like this. He did not want to make changes to the government, he wanted to be an absolute ruler. He later met Alexandra who he married. Nicholas depended on her a lot due to his inability to rule well.
  • Russo - Japanese War

    Russo - Japanese War
    Russia and Japan had been fighting over ports and trade in Asia, this cause tension and eventually war. The Russians went into the war with the mindset that it would be an easy fast war. This is not at all how it went down though. Japan had much better weapons and strategies. In the end Russia was the side that was quickly defeated. All of the riots and bad things going on in Russia just got worst.

    Many people marched to Tsar Nicholas’s Winter Palace. They were very peaceful and not meaning harm though. The Tsar had made them suffer and made their lives terrible. The people wanted to fix that. They not only wanted to fix that though, they wanted to fix the government too. The Tsar got tired of it and started shooting at the protesters which was a mistake because this just made them even more mad.

    Bloody Sunday Part 1
    On January 9, 1905 protesters that meant no harm marched on St. Petersburg. They went to the Tsar’s Winter Palace. This march was led by Georgy Gapon who was a priest of the Orthodox Church. There was a total of 150,000 proletariats that were involved in this. Of those 150,000 there was workers, wives and children. They were bringing a petition to the tsar that was focused on trying to fix the problems that the workers had.

    The soldiers that were at the Palace were ordered to shoot at the protesters. Over 100 were killed. This day became known as Bloody Sunday and started even more riots and mutinies in Russia.

    In the March Revolution the monarchy was overthrown. This was mostly because of Rasputin. He was a bad person and was abusing power. He was also spreading false rumors about him and the tsar wife.He was not helping the country what so ever. There was one man though who could take his place and his name was Joseph Stalin. Rasputin saw him as a threat and eventually killed him. Because of all the riots Nicholas ll was forced to abdicated the throne.

    After he abdicated the people exiled him and his family to Siberia. Everyone was mad at the royal family and finally executed them. The monarchy was soon replaced by the provisional government which was led by Alexander Kerensky. The provisional government was only a temporary fix and was quickly removed.

    The two opposing forces in the Russian Civil War were the Red Army which were Bolsheviks and White Army which was the anti-Bolsheviks. The Treaty of Brest - Litovisk really made the White Army mad.They were mad at the Bolsheviks and it didn’t turn out well.The Whites anger sparked a war against them. Alexander Kerensky who was the leader of the provisional government needed to do something.He gathered troops and needed to defeat the Bolsheviks.The Red Army and the White Army had entered a war.

    Peasants rioted the streets of Russia seeking reforms. Everyone was mad at the Tsar and they needed to do something. They made the tsar sign a document called the October Manifesto.The October Manifesto made an elected assembly called the Duma.The Duma made decisions for the people.As you can imagine Tsar Nicholas didn’t like this because he didn’t have enough power.So, to solve his problem he fired everyone.The Duma that solved the peoples problems didn’t really do that.

    Russia was on the Allies side during World War I. Russia wanted to focus on just the revolution and not the war. They couldn’t handle the war and the riots so they had to do something. Vladimir Lenin, who was a Bolshevik asked the Bolshevik’s in the Duma to drop out of the war. He did this because he knew they would listen to him. They had to sign the treaty of Brest - Litovisk with Germany. This document was signed on March 3rd 1918.

    Signing this made Russia give up large amounts of land and money. To add to that them leaving the war was a huge down set for the Allies, they lost one of their biggest and most powerful allies.

    In all they got 200,000 men. But, the Red Army was doing similar things, they had over 500,000 on their side. In 1920 the Red Army finally defeated the White Army and had won the war.

    The Russian Civil war was between the Red Army and the White Army. The Red Army was the Bolsheviks and the White Army was the Menshiviks and anti - Bolsheviks. The Whites in the beginning were not doing well and had no major areas in Russia. Vladimir Lenin was the leader of the Red Army and he was a good one. He was making up land quickly. The White army was staying in this battle though. They weren’t out yet. The White Army had British, French, Japanese and American troops come and help them.
  • USSR is Formed

    USSR is Formed
    The USSR was a group of countries that believed in Communism.This group was made up of Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia and the Transcaucasian Republic.These countries were formed on December 30, 1922.The USSR or Union of Socialist Republics was led by the Bolsheviks as well.
