The Great Purge was used by Stalin to eliminate any of those who opposed him in his party. He made public trials and usually forced the victim to admit that he was guilty by torture or by putting the family at harms way.

This eventually starts the downfall for Stalin as the country takes a huge loss. Although the Russians do fight back to regain the territory, Stalins power soon starts to decline. This also starts the alliance between Russia and the allies.
