  • Decemberist Revolt

    Decemberist Revolt
    The Revolt started in St. Petersburg when military officials started to revolt against Czar Nicholas. The officials felt threatened by the czar conservative views but they were eventually defeated by the czar. Nicholas then created rules and regulations so that another revolt wouldn't ever happen again.
  • Alaxander II Emancipation of Serfs

    Alaxander II Emancipation of Serfs
    In doing this, the serfs gained freedom but onl in stages. After 2 years they would be able to buy small plots of land from their owbers land holdings. Most of the land was extremely small in porportion.
  • Alexander II Assisinated

    Alaxander II wa assasinated when a member of the "People's Will" group threw a bomb in St. Peteresburg. The group had tried many times before to assasinate Alaxander but had failed. His 36 year old son took over the thrown after his death.

    This war was fought for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. Russia wanted China to lease the strategically important port of Port Arthur (now Lü-shun) at the tip of the Liaotung Peninsula, in southern Manchuria. But the war caused Russia to stop its expansion east.

    Georgy Apollonovich led a group of workers up to Winter Palace in St.Petersburg. The group was fired on by imperial forces. Many died and were wounded.

    Then in October strikes were started in Moscow that quickly spread to other cities. Czar had 2 choices: he either could use force to put down the rebellions, but he had no guarantee that this would be successful as he could not fully trust the military or he could make a conciliatory offer. He did the latter by issuing the October Manifesto on October 30th.

    The grand Russian army that had over a million troops was expected to squash the Austrian/Hungarian empire and their German allies. A "steam roller" effect was planned and the war was to end in a year.The Cossacks led calvalry charges against German machine gun nests, the calvalry getting anhililated in the process.

    The Czar was dealing with the March Revolution. This revolution happened in Petrograd when people started strikes, protests, and riots. The people eventually overthrew the czarist and Nicholas II gave up the thrown.
