  • Jan 1, 1200

    Rus Settlement

    This occured when the Slavs began to establish settlements in th Ukraine. The Slavs names these different settlements "Rus". One of the biggest russess if the capital of Ukraine, Kiev. This greatly helped Russia in terms of trade.

    Mongol Invasion

    The Mongols invaded Russia during this time period. Moscow was burned to the ground. The royal family with the exception of the Prince died when the Mongols lay siege to Vladimir and destroyed the city.

    Grand Duchy of Moscovy

    This was founded in 1280 in the city of Moscow. It was ruled by Duke Vasily the 2. He was rumored to be a fair and just leader.

    Czarist Russia

    During this timespan, Russia was governed by Czars or kings. The government was an absolute dictatorship. Ivan the terrible was the first czar. He was followed by Michael Romanov.

    Reign of Peter the Great

    Peter the Great was the first Emperor of Russia. St. Petersburg was named after him, a decision made by Peter himself. He caused Russia to be a great power and was the reason that the Treaty of Nystadt was signed.

    Reign of Catherine the Great

    She established what was know as the Free Economic Society in 1765 and was married to Peter the 3rd. Catherine is known for bringing Russia into the modern time.
  • Founding of Vladivostok

    Vladivostok was founded as a military outpost by the Russians and means "Rule the East".
  • Construction of Trans-Siberian railroad

    Construction of the railroad ws begun in 1892. The Russians wanted the railroad tracks to cross Manchuria. However, the Chinese did not give in. The Russians saw their opening in the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, crossing over to Manchuria with the railroad tracks.

    Russo Japanese War

    It is called the first great war of the 20th century. It stemmed from the construction of the railroad. The Japanese were not happy with the existence of the railroad in Manchuria. They faced up to the Russians in this war and won. The Russians were pushed out of Manchuria.
    Interestingly enough, one of the causes of the war was a desire for control over a specific water port.
  • Communist Revolution

    The Russians had previously defeated Napolean. This revolution overthrew the monarchy and introduced the Russian Communist Party.
  • Russian Orthodoxy

    The Russian Orthodoxy Church was disintegrated by the czars of Russia. During this period of time, atheism was the reigning thought process. However, following the collapse of Communism, the Russian Orthodoxy found its legs again. By the 1990s, the Russian Orthodoxy was back in place.

    Command Economic Practices

    The Russian command economic practices were in practice for many years. Certain areas were designated to produce specific goods. Those areas had a sort of ownership the production of that product. No other area could produce them even if costs could be cut in that way. This is a pretty expensive practice.
  • Lenin's Soviet Union SSR

    During this time the whole Russian realm was divided into 15 Soviet Specialist Republics. The Russian SSR was the largest and the other smaller SSRs were termed ASSRS. By 1924 it was officially called the USSR.
  • Russification

    During this time, people were relocated in order to reward or punish people. It also made those who were not Russian, move further east. This left behind a larger concentration of Russians in the SSRs that were not Russian.

    Seizure of Finland

    The Russians wanted Finland to use be used as military base against possible attacks from other countries. Finland did not trust Stalin, the leader at the time and rejected the offer. The war started soon after and the Finnish had little chance of winning. Russia was better equipped and ended up defeating Finland.
  • Soviet disintegration

    Mikhael Gorbachev resigned as the last Soviet President. People were disatisfied with Russification and the lack of freedom provided as a result. The Cold War was expensive and utilized many of the Russian resources. The Soviet flag came down and was immediately replaced with the Russian flag. Change had come.
  • Near Abroad

    This was a term that was introduced by the Russians for the newer countries around Russia today. The majority of these states are former Soviet Republics very close by. Russia is keeping a close eye on these countries to ensure that no possible uprisal occurs.

    Current discontent

    Russians have been very disatisfied with various things happening in Russia today. It is said that corruption is beoming more common place and reaching more and more areas. The economy is not truly working from a free market standpoint. Citizens also feel that they are not getting the sam benefits received during the time of the Soviet Union. Many Russians even feel that things were better during those times.
