  • 'The Seven Year War'

    On the 17th of August, 1756 the 'Seven Year War' began. On the 17th of may 1757 Russian troops entered the war.
  • Russian colonisation

    Austria, Prussia, and Russia divided Poland amongst themselves. Russia received Belarus, Lithuania, and Ukraine from Poland.
  • Catherine the Great

    Catherine the Great
    Catherine the Great ruled Russia for more than 30 years. During her rule, she allowed foreign investment. Before she died, she made Russia one of the worlds main, most recognised countries.
  • Russo-Turkish War.

    On the 25th of September, 1768, the Ottoman sultan declared war on Russia,.
  • Catherine the Great's death

    On the 17th of November, 1796, Catherine the Great died, after more than 30 years of ruling Russia.
  • Expansion

    During the year 1800, Russia began to expand from Finland to San Fransisco.
  • Angry Citizens

    Around the 1800s, citizens started going against the Czars, so they let the citizens have a say in the government, have more freedom, build industry, and modernize agriculture.
  • The French invasion.

    The French invaded Russia, but they could not manage to survive its freezing climate. Their leader was Napolean Bonaparte, who, at the time, was the ruler of France. Napolean came with over 600,000 men, and left with fewer than 10,000.
  • Karl Marx

    When revolutions came all over Western Europe, Karl Marx used his newspaper to create communism. It was hard for his ideas to be placed in Russia, because it was mainly an agricultural country.
  • The Crimean War

    The Crimean War was a conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the French Empire, the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The Ottoman Empire first declared war on Russia. Then Britain and France declared war on Russia too. In order to prevent the Austrian Empire entering the war, Russia evacuated Wallachia and Moldavia.
  • Czar Alexander II

    In 1861 Czar Alexander II built railroads, freed serfs, established the modern banking system, increased freedom of the press, and established a jury system.
  • 'Russification'.

    The 'Russification' policies required everyone who lived in Russia to speak Russian and to convert to Eastern Orthodox Christianity. They wanted everyone who was not born a Russian to act and speak like they were.
  • Alaska sold!

    In 1867, the Russian govournment sold Alaska to the U.S for $7.2 billion. This marked the end of Russia's expansion and the start of a new beginning.
  • The Russo-Japanese War.

    In early 1904, Japan attacked Russia's Naval base, Port Arthur, in China. In 1905, Port Arthur fell to the rule of the Japanese. This was the war that led to the Russian Revolution.
  • The start of the Russian Revolution.

    The Russian Revolution started with a group of workers that wanted better working conditions. They were on their way to the Czar Palace. This day was called Bloody Sunday, because soldiers fired at the workers, and over 1000 of them died.
  • The Trans-Siberian Railway.

    Russia's longest rauilway line, the Trans-Siberian Railway, is completed. It is 9,300km long and links the capital city, Moscow, with the port of Vladivostok. The Railway was origionally planned to be completed in 1904, however, when the Japanese declared war on Russia, their priorities changed! :)
  • World War 1.

    Nicholas II was in power of Russia at the beginning of World War one. Russia fought along the Eastern Front and pushed out Germany. More than 27 million soldiers and citizens died in the process. After the Great War, Russia was now called the Soviet Union.
  • Defending Siberia

    Russia mobilized its army to defend Serbia.
  • Germany

    Germany declared war on Russia in defense of Austria-Hungary.
  • Austria-Hungary

    Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia.
  • The Battle of Masurian Lakes

    The Battle of Masurian Lakes was between the Russian First Army and Germany. No victory was claimed but over 100,000 Russians were taken prisoner.
  • Turkey

    Turkey enters the Great War, helping with the naval bombardment of Russia.
  • Russia

    Russia declared war on Turkey.
