Russia and WW1

  • Crimean War

    Fight between Russia, the alliance of Britain, France, Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire. The cause of the war was religion and control over the holy places. The war was a perfect example of military incompetence on all sides. It was an embarrassing defeat for Russia. The Black Sea was made neutral ground, which prohibited warships and any fortifications on its shores.
  • The League of Three Emperors

    Agreement between Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Russia. Announcement of the meeting of emperors Francis Jospeh, William I, and Alexander I. It said that each would not support an enemy if one of them went to war with a fourth country. The league later broke down.
  • Triple Alliance

    Secret agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy which was periodically renewed until WW1. Each member promised mutual support in the event of an attack by any other great power.
  • The Reinsurance Treaty Alliances

    Secret treaty that was signed to continue the alliance with Russia after the breakdown of the League of the Three Emperors. Russia promised to remain neutral in the event of France attacking Germany; Germany promised to remain neutral in the even of Austria attacking Russia, or the even of Russia intervening in the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.
  • Franco-Russian Alliance

    Agreement between Russia and France, resulting from Germany's decision not to renew the Reinsurance Treaty. It promised mutual military assistance if either country was attacked.
  • Russo-Japanese War (Militarism)

    Military conflict in which Japan forced Russia to abandon its expansionist policy in the Far East. It developed out of the rivalry for dominance in Korea and Manchuria.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Troops of Russian Czar Nicholas fire upon peaceful demonstrators in St. Petesburg, killing hundreds.
  • Duma

    Continuing political unrest in Russia, including a general strike, resulting in the creating of a national legislative assembly know as the Duma by the Czar.
  • October Manefesto

    It was issued in the chaos of the 1905 revolution by Nicholas II under the influence of Sergi Witte. It promised to grant freedom of religion, speech, assembly, association, a bicameral parliament, broad participation in the Duma, and that no law could be issued without its consent.
  • The Triple Entente Alliances

    Alliance between Russia, France, and Britain was born from the French-Russian Alliench and the Entente Cordiale. Decided alliances taken during WW1. Formed in reaction to the Triple Alliance.
