    Roman Republic
    The Roman Republic was made up of 300 officals. They would vote on issues by placing black and white stones into pots. In times of war, the republic would give totally control to the Consul (second in command), and he would become dictator. When Rome was not in war, the Senate was back in control.
  • Julius Ceaser

    Julius Ceaser
    Julius Ceasar, Gnaeus Pompey, Licinius Crassus, helped bring end to Roman Republic. The three fought for the title of emperor, and in the end Julius won. His rule marked the beginning of Roman flourishment. Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44 BC by a close friend how had been manipulated by the Senate.

  • Augustus

    Augustus
    27 BC, Senate gave Octavian title Augustus, “the revered one”. New towns, improved roads, and a better army was the result of Augustus as leader. He died of old age (AD 14)
  • Octavian

    Octavian
    Octavian was the adopted son of Julius Caeser. He later took back power from the Roman Republic with Marc Anthony and Lepidus. Lepidus was forgotten about and Marc Anthony sent to Egypt. While in Egypt, Anthony fell in love with Cleopatra, and plotted to overthrow Octavian. Octavian heard of these plans and sent his forces to assassinate Anthony; Rather dying from his own hands than Octavians, he took his own life. Octavian then created new political order, known today as the Empire.
  • Tiberius

    Tiberius
    Tiberius was the third emperor in the Julio-Claudians dynasty.He was the step-son of Augutus, however not his first choice in heir. He was a good soilder, but lacked as a ruler. Uprisings began in conquered sectors of Rome (present day Germany). Tiberius was unable to deal with these riots and asked Germanicus, his adopted son and beloved military officer to control soldiers. He murdered Germanicus, due to fear of being overthrown. He also brutally killed Germanicus' sons, except for Caligula.

    Caligula
    As a child, Caligula's mother had been exiled, his 2 brothers executed, and his father Germanicus murdered. Caligula pretend as he was a god. He would make people kiss his feet and seduce their wives at dinner parties. He wanted to sacrifice an animal as a offering to god, but instead killed a priest who was standing nearby. In peoples minds, Caligula was cruel and mean. In 41 AD, he was murdered by four of his closest friends.
  • Claudius

    Claudius
    Claudius rose to throne when Caligula was murdered. His physical appearance wasn't the most appealing, though this only helped him to become a better leader. Claudius made drastic changes to the Roman Empire. He made useful laws, reduced taxes, increased the authority of the senate, built many buildings and the tunnel from Lake Lucinus to the River Liris.
  • Nero

    Nero
    Nero came to power when his step-father, Claudius Ceaser, was poisoned by his mother. Nero was only sixteen when he became emperor; he was also to be the last of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Nero was a cruel and unjust man, he brutally killed most of his family including his step-brother, and mother, the only person who ever stood by him. It is also reported that Nero watched Rome burn, as he played his harp, some even say that he set Rome to burn himself then blamed it on the Christians.
