Mr. Shumway accepted his first teaching position at the Johnnie John Sr. School in Crooked Creek, Alaska. This marked the beginning of his employment in the Kuspuk School District.

Mr. Shumway transfered to Aniak Jr./Sr. High School in Aniak, AK. While teacher in this school, he served as the coach of the boys basketball team, whose mascot is the "Halfbreeds."

Mr. Shumway accepted a teaching position at Mt. Blue Middle School in Farmington, Maine, his hometown. He taught there two years, during which time he coached Football, JH Basketball, and JV Baseball at Mt. Blue.

Mr. Shumway adopts a loveable Australian Shepherd while living in Maine. He found her in the classified adds in Uncle Henry's. He picked her up in New Hampshire on Columbus Day, and they have been best friends ever since. Her name was Jazmine, but Mr. Shumway changed it to Kusko in honor of the Kuskokwim River.

Mr. Shumway returned to Crooked Creek, AK after a three year absence. It was like he never left, and he would stay there for two additional years.

Mr. Shumway accepted a position teaching at Glennallen High School in Glennallen, AK.

Mr. Shumway moved into a small house at mile 14 on the Edgerton Highway.
