    Relations to the US naval port. Pres. Grover Cleveland denied annexation. Then later passed by congress to annex Hawaii

    The USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American citizens while Cuba revolutionaries were fighting to win independence from Spain.
    Publishers Pulitzer & Hearst newspaper deliberately sensationalized, depicting the Spaniards as murderous and brutes in order to sell newspaper, having media reaction outraged Americans and embarrassed Spain.

  • Theodore Roosevelt- Battle of San Juan Hill"Rough Riders"

    Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore rose. Raised a volunteer force known as regiments they defeated Spanish forces at San Juan Hill in Cuba.

    The open door policy gave all nations equal rights when trading with China. The boxer rebellion threatened the lives of foreigners living in China. An International army crushed the rebellion.

    Panama Canal by U.S.

    The US wanted to build the Panama to shorten the ocean journey from the east coast to west coast.
    The US entered into negotiation but could not agree in terms, president Roosevelt struck a deal w Panama rebels who wished to obtain the independence
    Roosevelt recognized Panama as a new country. Panama gave the US control of a 10-mile rain forest.

    The monroe doctrine blocked further expansion of Europe in the western hemisphere, the Roosevelt corollary went one step further.
    Renounced interventionism and established his good neighbor policy for the western hemisphere.
