    Adolf was homeless until 1913. He moved to Vienna to become an artist, but he was rejected because his art was unfit for painting. The attached picture is a sample of his work.

    Hitler in WWI
    Hitler fled the Austrian draft but joined the German troops after moving to Munich in 1913. He joined the Bavarian army in 1914 until the end of the war in 1918.

  • Joins the German Workers Party

    Joins the German Workers Party
    He was a police spy infilitrating the DAP but was impressed by the small party and joined in July of 1919.

  • Beer Hall Putsch

    Hitler and the SA stormed a public meeting at a beer hall in Munich. They demanded support for the local military establishment to overthrow the government. Police stopped the attempted coup and Hitler fled.

  • Hitler Arrested

    Hitler was sentenced tp prison for high treason. During his trial he became a national figure becasue he was allowed unlimited time to speak. His popularity soared because of his nationalistic sentiment.

  • Hitler Pardoned and Released

    4 and a half years short of the 5 year sentence.

    Mein Kampf was published in 2 volumes in 1925 and 1926 selling over 10 million copies by the end of the war. It was an autobiography and exposition of his ideology.

    After growing the NSDAP, Hitler began to seek political power.

    The president reluctantly agreed to appoint Hitler Chancellor of a coalition government formed by the NSDAP and DNVP. However, the Nazis were to be contained by a framework of conservative cabinet ministers.

  • President Hindenburg dies

    Rather than call new elections as required by the constitution, Hitler's cabinet proclaimed the presidency vacant and transferred the role and powers of the head of state to Hitler as Führer und Reichskanzler (leader and chancellor).
    Hitler now became Supreme Commander of the armed forces. When it came time for the soldiers and sailors to swear the traditional loyalty oath, it had been altered into an oath of personal loyalty to Hitler.
