First battle of the Texas Revolution resulting in one casualty from the Mexican Army. This battle is where the token phrase, "come and take it" comes from. The Texan army was referring to a cannon that belonged to the Mexican army. -
Texas colonists rebelling from Mexico in a war for independence. The revolution started in October of 1835 and did not end until April of 1836. -
Texas Declaration of Independence was created. Similarly to the U.S. Declaration of Independence the document focussed on life, liberty and property. -
Mexican president Santa Anna led his army to victory and had little mercy for the Texan soldiers fighting to defend The Alamo. The Mexican Army won and almost the entire Texas defense was taken out. The lack of mercy shown by Santa Anna lead many Texan colonists to join the Texan defense and fight for Texas. This battle lasted less than a month, starting February 23, 1836 and ending March 6, 1836. -
350 Texans were captured outside of Goliad including their commander James Fannin. The Mexican Army shot and killed all of the prisoners they had taken captive. This turned the revolution in favor of the Mexican Army. -
The Battle of San Jacinto ended the Texas Revolution which allowed Texas to have de facto independence. This battle was short lived, Texas declared victory in after only 18 minutes. The Texan soldiers went into this battle shouting, "Remember the Alamo!", and "Remember Goliad!". They were referring to the Battle of the Alamo and the Goliad Massacre where the Mexican army showed zero mercy against the Texas army. -
This treaty stated that Santa Anna and the Mexican Army would withdraw their forces below the Rio Grande and to not take up arms against Texas. -
from 1836-1838 Houston served as the first president of Texas. -
The U.S. recognizes Texas separate from Mexico. Texas becomes known as the Republic of Texas. -
Mirabeau was elected as the second president of Texas, at this time a president could not succeed himself which is why Houston did not run for two consecutive terms. -
Sam Houston won by popular vote and served his second term. He was a great leader and army general. Even in the face of defeat he kept pushing and never gave up. He trusted in God to protect him and lead him down the right path. -
Texas was absorbed into the United States and admitted into the Union as the 29th state.
