For the previous two nights prior, Sam Houston had pushed his soldiers to their limit in order to make it the San Jacinto River in time to have an advantage of the Mexican Army. Once battle had started on the 21st it took the Texans only 18 minutes to capture Santa Anna's camp.

On this date Marabeau B. Lamar took over as president of the Republic of Texas. He was spited by Sam Houston who was not a fan of Lamar and tried to spite him by presenting a three hour farewell address that self-empowerd his own presidency.

William Henry Harrison was elected to be president following Martin Van Buren in 1841. However, he died of pneumonia only a month after he was elected. This then Led his vice president John Tyler to take over his role as the American President.

On this date in 1842, Alexander Somervell announced failure for his mission. The mission was a counter part of the Somervell Expedition whos purpose was to raid Mexican cities and seizing supplies. When Somervell felt like his mission could not be completed he ordered his men to abort but only 189 men chose to do so thus launching the Mier Expedition.

James K. Polk took over presidency for John Tyler in 1845 as the 11t president of the United States. He is known for his expanding the territory of the US following the Mexican- American War.
