A group of mostly American born people rebelled against Mexico's government and declared that Texas be an independent republic. By March of 1836, members of the Texas convention established a Constitution for the Republic of Texas and also a Declaration of Independence. The army of Texas was led by Sam Houston and declared victory at the battle of San Jacinto, April of 1836.
