Texas became its own country until it agreed to join the United States in 1845. Sam Houston became the first president.

Houston and his men were able to conquer Santa Ana and his troops. "Remember the Alamo!" shouted Houston. Santa Anna was captured and made Sam Houston's slave. Also, he was made to sign over Texas independence papers.

The battle lasted 13 days and the bravery of the men still stands tall today. Santa Anna and his men were able to take the Alamo.

Sam Houston marries again. Her name is Margaret Lea from Alabama.

This expedition was a disaster under the command of Gen.Hugh McLeod. The heat and lack of food soon took a toll on the men and when they reached New Mexico they were arrested and most men did not resist but surrendered and were imprisoned. This expedition ruined all hope of trade with New Mexico.

Santa Anna's wife dies and he marries a young 15-year-old and the people are upset and he goes into exile to Cuba, but his leadership skills are needed soon afterward. Soon the Mexican-American War will happen in 1846.
