    Breaking Free from Mexico
    Many Texans wanted to break free from Mexico. They chose 44 delegates to represent them at Washinton on the Brazos. These delegates represented the 17 muncipalities and a small settlement at Pecan Point on the Red River. They voted to send men including Stephen F. Austin to the United States to get supplies, money, men, and "sympathy for the Texas cause."

    The Constitution of the Republic of Texas
    The Constitution was patterned after the US/several southern states. It provided for a unitary, tripartite government.The president would be elected to a 3 year term and could not succeed himself. They had a two house Congress. They also voted to legalize slavery but prohibited foreign slave trade. The Alama fell to Mexican control, and the Constitution was adopted. David G. Burnet was voted as President.     The Republic after the Battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto
    Problems arose such as few roads, very little money, no regular mail system, and communication was poor. Most families were poor. An election was held and Sam Houston was elected President. The people also voted to accept the Constitution and seek annexation at that time. The national debt stood at $1,250,000.     Congress tried to pass laws getting people to move to Texas. They were given land or were promised that they would not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time. The population increased to around 7,000 per year due to immigration. No public school system or public university was established during this time.     The Annexation of Texas became a major issue in the US election of 1844.The British and French helped to make peace with Mexico and the last Comanche Chief at war with Texas.This ended the hostilites for the Republic. Anson Jones was President of the Republic.
