On August, 3, 1492 Columbus left Palos, Spain to try to find an alternate route to Asia. Columbus had established a small colony in Hispaniola which he believed to be Japan. He returned to Spain in March 1493 with gold, spices, and captives. He was then given the title of "admiral of the ocean sea".

In 1497 a Portuguese hired Da Gama to go to India.Da Gama led a team of four ships from Portugal to India on July 8th. He reached India on May 20th, Da Gama reached Calicut, India.

Michelangelo began the construction of th Statue of David some time in the year 1501. He was comissioned by Florence Cathedral to sculpt a statue of David to put outside of the cathedral. Michelangelo completed the statue in 1504.

Hernando Cortes fought to conquer the Aztecs from 1519-1521. He killed many Aztec warriors, mostly from diseases such as smallpox, measles, mumps, and typhus. Finally on August, 13, 1521 the Aztecs surrendered to Cortes.
