    Marconi was an Italian inventor. He was the first person to send and receive a radio signal. It didn't have any voice in it. There is speculation on if he was in fact the first person but with good pr he is known as the first.

    The wireless Ship Act requires all U.S ships traveling over 200 miles off the coast to be equipped with wireless radios. It helped them being able to communicate. If they needed help or anything they could use the radios. The titanic used it to broadcast there sos that helped save lots of people.

    Uncle Charlie was a term for people that created their own personal radio stations. This made it very crowded in radio space as you might pick up the wrong station. Anybody who had money could go and buy the equipment to have a radio station.

    In 1920 a station previously named 8xk, now known as KDKA started broadcasting on radios. Frank Conrad is the creator of the station. Because he couldn't have music played through he put music near the microphone to get played.

    Radio stations started having advertisements played to create money. Companys paid the station to put their advertisement so it can be presented to a larger group of people. In 1922 WEAF advertised a 10 minute commercial that charged for $50s.

    Because of Uncle Charlie being too popular they created the FRC to organize the licensing of transmitters. They assigned radio station frequencies, call letters, and power limits.

    In the 30's and 40's people where in the middle of the great depression. Familys got together and used to listen to the radio. Lots of people saved up and bought radios.

    Tvs started booming and tvs became more popular. Because of that advertisements went to tvs and radios started to lose lots of money. It was also hard for radio shows to convert to tv shows.
