At a gathering, Pip notices that Drummle is gazing at Estella and confronts her about it. Estella says she knows and compares herself to a candle and Drummle to a moth. Pip is angered, but Estella tells him that she only does this to decieve and play with Drummle. She confesses to him that is something she chooses not to do to him. This signifies Estella's possible compassion, for she refuses to hurt him, and instead ignores him.
