Personal Technology Timeline

  • World Wide Web/Internet

    World Wide Web/Internet
I don't actually know when I started using the Internet, but it would have to have been before all of the other events on my timeline. I never had real access to the Internet until we built an office in my house and installed a couple desktop comupters. I know some of the first things I did on the Internet were: Read on ESPN, play games, and message friends. The whole idea of the Internet and its power was pretty unbelievable at its time, and I couldn't imagine a day without it now.
  • Social Networking Sites

    Social Networking Sites
I still remember the time I made my Facebook account. I was in 4th grade, and if I remember correctly, I probably wasn't supposed to have an account yet. I remember how 'cool' it was at the time, especially being able to message all of my friends in the same place. Today, it seems like the world virtually revolves around social media. Although I have accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, I try not to let them take control of me.
  • HDTV

    HDTV
I will never forget the massive box-TV that my family had growing up. I remember how grainy it was, and how extremely heavy it was when we would move it. When we finally upgraded to a flat-screen with real HDTV capabilities, it was almost life changing. It believe it was pretty new technology at the time, which seemed to make it that much cooler. It is interesting to see that years later HDTV is still a huge part of my technological life, and that it isn't really going anywhere.
  • Email

    Email
I still remember the time I made my first email. I remember because I had to make it in order to be in a fantasy football league with my friends. It is interesting looking back on this, and seeing how important email is in my life now. I get hundreds of them a week, some of which are filled with important information, and it is often the main means of communication when I am at school.
  • Cell Phone

    Cell Phone
I remember when I got my first phone for Christmas when I was 14. I know it was a lot later than most of my friends had gotten them, which frustrated me at the time. Looking back, I could not imagine a day without my phone. I guess being in Europe is a glimpse of that, as I cannot call and do not get some texts. However, phones these days do so much more as I still find myself checking social media, playing games, tracking steps, listening to music, and watching TV regularly.
