    This is my uncle whom I interviewed. He is my dad's brother-in-law. He and his wife, my aunt, reside in Hampton, VA. During 1959-1964 he was in 8th grade and high school. He attended George Wythe Junior High School in Hampton and Hampton High School, also in Hampton. He attended the University of Michigan after high school graduation (1963) and graduated with his Masters in 1970.

    Desegregation in Hampton

    My uncle and his family were not real affected by it in Hampton. "The school Superintendent in Hampton desided that he was not going to follow what was happening in norfolk at the time, close schools. A lot of students from Norfolk came to Hampton to still be able to attend public school. The first African American student to come to Hampton High was my junior year, for one year" he told me. "Growing up our neighboorhoods and the neighborhood schools were largly still segregated."

    The 1,500 black students of Prince Edward County, mostly unschooled for four years, are invited to return to formal classes through the assistance of the new, privately organized Prince Edward Free School Association, which leases four of the closed public school facilities for one year with the support of federal officials and private funds.

    Uncle Richard retired from Naval Architecture from the Newport News Shipyard. A Naval Architect is a professional engineer who is responsible for the design, construction and repair of ships.
