How it Relates to the Theme: This relates to the theme because Elie knew that he had to stay together with his family in order to survive and for them to survive too. -
Summary: Elie's Family had just arrived in Birkenau and an SS Guard came to them to tell them, "Men to the left! Woman to the right!" This was the last time Elie would see his mother and sister.
Type of Event: Positive and Negative Character Development (Elie loses his mother and sister, but his relationship with his dad improves)
How it Relates to the Theme: When his mother and sister went to the right, he realized that all he had left was his father and he needed him to survive this journey. -
Summary: Dr. Mengele pointed the baton to the left for both Elie and his father, which meant that they are going to the crematorium. Elie sees someone reciting Kaddish and feels angered towards god and becomes less faithful because in this chaos, god has chosen to stay silent.

How it Relates to the Theme: This relates to the theme because when Elie started to lose faith in god he started to believe in his father more. -
Summary: The camp decided that a selection should happen and an SS Guard would go around and find inmates that are extremely frail. Then they would write their number down for good for crematorium.

How it Relates to the Theme: When Elie first heard about this he was worried about how his father would pass the selection, since he was so frail and had aged so much. Elie worries about this because his father is one of his main reasons for still living. -
Summary: While Elie's father was moaning because of the pain, an officer came by and told him to be quiet, but he did not hear. Then the officer did a violent blow to Elie's father's head with a club, and Elie did not see his father the next day after he woke up.

How it Relates to the Theme: A little after this Elie realizes that without his father he might have not survived and that that their relationship was everything because when his dad died nothing mattered.
